How do we find out someone's phone number from the Net?

My friend told me that she was able to find out from the internet the phone number of someone whose address she had with her. She told me about entering the first three letters of the person's name and his street name. I tried this, but could not succeed. Is there anyone who can help me in this? Is the telephone director available in the NET something which we can simply browse through?

There are several ways to do it if you have the name and especially the address. Now this is only if the phone number is listed. If it's not published and is unlisted then it won't come up. I usually try Yahoo People Search. http://people.yahoo.com/ You can also search for email addresses there.

If you are from the US, you can use www.whitepages.com and you can do a reverse address search, a name search or just about any combination.

Some countries will allow you to do this by a reverse system, but I believe it depends on the actual country you are trying to do it in. It is not available here in Australia because we have a few different telephone service providers and people could be with any one of them. There is no national directory which combines all of the as far as I know. Also here we have what are called "silent" or "unlisted" numbers, which is where the only way to get the phone number of that person is to know them personally or for them to give it to you. We actually have one of these numbers, and I would be horrified to think that someone could type in the first three letters of my name and get my phone number. The other thing is that there could be more than one person with the same first three letters in their name who live in the same street. Now that could cause plenty of confusion I would think. However, why not contact your friend and ask her to show you how to do it, or alternatively to send you very explicit instructions on what you have to do. The alternative of course is to ask the person whose phone number you want, what it is. :)

Depends where you're from I guess. Here in Canada, we have a website that'll find people across the country, either their adress by reverse lookup with the phone number or their phone number by searching with their name and/or adress. For those interested by this website, it's http://www.canada411.com

I really wouldn't like to think that someone can get your phone No. from the internet. I do know that having done telemarketing, even if your phone No. is private it can still be found. Your No. is on a list and can be sold to companies for telemarketing purposes, which I think is an invasion of privacy, but thats life.
