My Norton subscription is running out, and I don't want to keep on with it, because I know there are other free software that can do exactly the same thing. Can someone give me some advice for a free anti virus, and free firewall, that are reliable. Thanks

Hi, there is a free antivirus software which you can rely. Currently, I am using avira antivir personal classic edition. I have been using this software for almost two years. Since then, I have never had any problems at all with regards to the overall function and system performance of my machine. Otherwise, I am so impressed and grateful with its performance. It updates on a regular basis and can be scheduled at your most convenient time. It is very light on resources and does not use a lot of memory. Hence, does not slow down your computer. Well for firewall, no need to download anymore. Windows firewall is enough to help protect your machine from viruses. Having two firewalls would likely have some conflicts to your machine which is not good. That's it. Hope this would help. Have a nice day and God speed!

for free anti virus, the top choices (i have tested them out myself and they are indeed very good) are avira antivir and avast. to back up my claim, you can check my discussion. i put up a link about an independent test done on anti virus softwares in which avira and avast came out on top in the 2007 tests http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1305750.aspx for firewall, zone alarm is good but annoying. if you don't want annoying messages but provides secure protection, try PCtools firewall http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1312431.aspx

Norton is reliable though it is expensive. Try this site it might be good. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

I see it's been awhile since you opened this thread, yet you didn't get many answers besides AVG and ZoneAlarm. If you're still looking, or if you're not satisfied with whatever replacements you've opted for since, I have a solid recommendation for you. It's called AOL Safety and Security Center. All you have to do is sign up for a free e-mail account with AOL (do whatever you want with it), and this all-in-one security suite is yours free. It comes with antivirus and firewall/IPS powered by McAfee, and antispyware by CA PestPatrol. I've found the preventative defenses in McAfee's latest version to be excellent, and ICSA Labs seems to agree. McAfee is the only vendor with ICSA certification in all three categories of traditional endpoint security: antivirus, antispyware, and PC firewall. You can sign up with AOL and download the S&SC here: http://daol.aol.com/safetycenter

I have been using AVG anti virus free edition for more than 3 years now. It's look like this anti virus is dependable. As long as you keep your virus database up to date your computer will be fine.

If you want a reliable and free firewall then go for Zone Alarm. Its free and safe. You can use AVG as your free anti-virus but i don't trust AVG 100%. Best way to protect your computer is use AVG as your online scanner and use any other free anti-virus off line for the safety of your data.
