Do you give your SS number?

When I join a program on the internet, sometimes they require my social security number. When I type it in, I "accidently" make a typo and change one number. Do you give out your real number? Do you just not join? What is your solution to the problem. I never give out my SS number online, it just isn't prudent. You can change the number when they send your w2.

NO, I do not give out my social security number. I do not feel comfortable in doing that. And if an online place requires me to enter my social to join, I do not join. I would not want to enter anyone else's either because what if they used it as me and I could be pinned with identity theft? Social security numbers are very important numbers and I do not hand them out to just anybody.

I never join programs that ask for it. I just don't feel its safe, so I just skip it. I know there are many out there that don't need it, so those are the ones I choose to do.

I think they should only require that information if you've made money, and they need to send you papers

Interesting. I never thought of it that way, but I know I accidently did this with a CC my husband and I have on accident, but I can see why some might try to do it to protect themselves. I guess for me, I have not had to put it too many places to really worry about it though.

I suppose anyone could really get it if they wanted it, but I'd hate to help them out

It depends on who needs it and why. For example, I went to sign up for membership at a video store and the requested my SS number. I flat out refused and finally they just asked for the last 4. Unless I know it is official I'll just leave the space blank. As for putting the wrong number, people may take it as is and then you wouldn't just be hurting yourself.

I have in the past when I was new, but now I do the same thing you do. They don't need it, just having you type in the right amount of digits covers their behinds with the IRS anyway. As long as you pay your taxes, everything's fine.

so glad to see you again. If it were illegal to make a mistake on the number, why do they give you the option to correct it on the W4. LOL

We do not have a social security number here in Australia but plenty of other things that can identify a person. In fact I think there are way to many different numbers and it can be quite annoying to remember them all. In the main if I have to produce a number it would be my Tax File # and the only people that goes to are official government departments or an employer and that is done in person anyway. However the bank also requires the TFN, but they get in person, written down by me. The Chemist and Doctor both require my Medicare and Pension numbers, but they are given them in person. There is no way that I would give out any of these numbers over the internet, simply because I do not know who is gathering this information and what they plan to do with it. So, if they need the number that badly, I do not need them that badly to give it to them. I would think the best option would be to leave it blank rather than give the wrong number out, because in actual fact that number probably belongs to another person.

No, I won't give it out over the internet. I don't trust the internet and its users that much.

I would not do it unless it is a legit thing. Like a government kind of a site.

Never, never, never do I give my SSN online. There is just no reason to. If I were to make money online, I would call the company and give to the appropriate person, but I would not give it online or fax it.

Why would any program require your ssn? Are they hiring you to work forthem and are you going to make more than the maximum free earnings allowed? I don't think So. Never give out your SSN or SIN (canada) to anyone besides your boss. Your ssn is simply a registration number for the tax people.

I give my SS number. Most data in on the internet now anyway and if someone really wanted to look for it, it could easily be found. So I gave up caring abut certain things, though you should trust who your giving it to.
