From scratch. Perhaps starting with a photo I have. Does it take special software to do it? Have you ever done this?

yes my avatars are animated by me. i downloaded a picture from internet and edited it in adobe photoshop and then in imageready. its very helpful in creating animations. u can use also macromedia flash, or gimp which is free. as for me editing pictures and animate them is easy, at least as animated pictures and not whole movies.

If you did your own avatar there it looks pretty good. Well done.

Yeah, but you did a good job with it. I would like to take a cat photo and make the cats head move but I am afraid it will be too much work. Could I instead take a motion video and turn it into a good looking gif?

Most avatars are animated GIFs. They are multiple images that plays on a loop. I'd recommend Adobe Fireworks or ULeads' CoolGIF when making animated GIFs for use as avatars. =)

Animated text for Asylum
The file format used for an avatar is usually an animated gif, which is a series of images played in rotation to emulate movement. It would be very difficult to try to do this with a picture, because you would need several pictures with very slight differences to link together, just as a film has frames with a slight difference. You could use the picture and add animated text to it, which is a very simple matter with the right software. The program that I use is Ulead gif animator.

for that you shold know a bit of gif animation and then you can easily make an animated avtar. there is no big deal in it. now the quality depends on how much well you can make which depends on how well you know the software to handle and the animation basics.and also a bit f hard work is required so that the extra bit comes out in your work.
