Where Does the phrase "piggy bank" come from

I have been wondering about where certain words come from. However, the "piggy bank" has bothered me most recently. I think because a lot of banks are giving away free piggy banks to those who open new accounts due to Chinese New Year, and it coming to be Year of the Pig. Does anyone know where it comes from? Why piggy bank?
