Have you ever used the tying method on any of your quilts? If so,could you tell me if this method holds the layers together well? Should you handwash a quilt made in this manner or is it ok to put it in the gentle cycle?

I sew, but I have never made a quilt. Try searching for ideas on line. I think it's safe to machine wash it on a gentle cycle, and then let it hang dry.

Yes, I have tied quilts (although I was always taught these are comforters, they only become quilts when they are quilted [stitched] anyone else heard this?) Anyhow, I have made several lap sized blankets that I tied rather than stitched. They have held together well and I do machine wash and dry them.

Thank you so much for the response. It's a relief to know that they hold together in the washer! I am working on quilts for my boys, first quilts I've made, all stitched by hand and am almost at the tying stage but was afraid to use it for fear that they might fall apart in the washer. I read somewhere that tying is the oldest method of quilting. My line of thinking was that since it's the oldest method maybe they might not hold up in a modern washing machine. Again, thank you so much for the information!

I wish I had the talent to tailor clothing! I'm just a crafty sort who works with mostly straight seams. :)

Yes, I use it quite frequently when I make denim quilts. I tie them and they work great. I never hand wash my quilts but I have a HE front loading washer so there is no agatator (spelling?) to be rough on the quilt. If you have a regular washer, you may want to take it to the laundrymat to wash it.

Yes, tying os a very popular method in making quilts. If it has 3-layers it is a quilt. A comforter usually has 3 layers, but it is usually quite alot thicker than quilt. These days there guideless are not so strict on what consitutes a quilt. People now do their entire quilts on their sewing machine. Infact sewing machines are now made just for quilting and it has become a huge industry. There are purists that insist this is not true quilting. I think we have to choose the method that we like best and bests express our personality and life style. I use tying for most baby quilts ,and I know they get washed a lot . I tend to tie fairly close together- no more than a fist in between each tie. I have plans to make a blue jean quilt and will plan to tie that as well.
