You and your career.

CAREER/PROFESSION: Was it your choice? Did it choose you? or Was it chosen for you? Sometimes, parents in their desire to give us the best, foist their ambitions and frustrations on their children. When choosing a college degree, they try to influence their kids to take up courses that they (the parents) like or wanted to take when they were young. Did this happen to you? Or were you able to pursue the career of your choice? Accounting has always been my first choice. But if schools had Computer Programming or Engineering back then, i would have changed course.

Its always a good thing that we wanted our career and we're happy with it. I graduated B.S. Foreign Service but ended to be in computer works. Sometimes its the scarcity of the job that forced us to do things that is not in line with our profession. But if we can have the chance to be in job which is our profession or i might say our likes, then grab it.

I've never been real career minded, just gone with the flow, I was so keen to leave school that I joined a training scheme, just to get some money in my pocket. I was interested in the office world so that's where I started. My aunt had the greatest influence over me because she was a secretary and said I would do well to get into the secretarial field which is what I did I got my typing qualifications and became a secretary. I've had a number of different jobs in my life, from being a secretary to working on the phones. It wasn't until I was 32 that I knew what my career was going to be and that was working with children.

From as far back as I have memory, I wanted to be a nurse. I would tear arms off my dolls amd make holes in my stuffed animals so that I could 'nurse' them to health with my homemade bandages and imagination. My parents just watched and told me that I could 'be anything that I wanted to be if I worked for it' (yes, they are remarkable parents who I honor proudly to this day). They never tried to sway my thinking about what I wanted to do with my life. Yes, I became a nurse and absolutely love it, as much now as I did when I was taking care of those teddybears!

Yes, it happened to me. When I was done studying I went into a job of my mom's choice. I tried to stick it out but after 7 years I quit because I suffered a nervous breakdown. Now, I am doing what I want and that is teaching piano to people who like music (but some kids are learning cos their parents want them to).
