Do you own a pool?

We bought a new house in July of '06, and the biggest selling point was the pool. However, we really didn't get much use out of it last summer due to being so busy with the new house. We have also learned it's alot of responsibility. Still, I love the fact that we own a pool and can go swimming virtually whenever we want to. I have some questions for other pool owners. Do you have a pool warmer, for use in colder weathers? If so, is it worth it? Does it increase your utility bills much? Also, how do you "open your pool"? Do you pay someone, or find it cheaper and easier to do it alone. Millionaires and other much more fortunate people (if you have a pool boy in other words) please do not respond (hehe :-))

I used to have a pool but don't have one at this house. I loved it, though! Mostly because we always had one, growing up, so I got used to having ready access. It sounds as though you're describing an in-ground pool... right? My sister has one currently and it's lovely. They did have a heater for it (we're in Canada so the season can be mighty short if you don't heat) but their utility bills were equal to what it cost them to heat their house in the winter! It was too much. What they did was they purchased a solar heating system. It is installed on the roof of their house and it supplies heated water back into the pool. They are really happy with it and the water is always a beautiful temperature! The initial cash outlay to purchase the system was a few thousand dollars but, over the projected life of it, they feel it was absolutely worth the cost and that they will save compared to their awful utility bills. We used to open and close our own pool every year. Once you learn how to do it, the appropriate treatments and such, it's not really hard. Just a bit of time and effort :) My sister pays a company to open and close hers every season. They prefer not having to do it. I really do miss being able to swim daily... but, with their permission, we make great use of my sister's pool :) They'd rather have people in it as much as possible each season, rather than paying for it to sit there, looking appealing LOL

Thanks so much for your input! Yes, it is inground. I will look into the solar powered heater...that sounds interesting.
