World of Warcraft Hunters - what is the best pet to have?

I'm just curious if there are any other people out there who are hunters, what do you think are the best pets to have? I currently have a wolf, and love the versatility of the wolf, but am thinking I might pick up another and am looking for good suggestions for a pet with either cool skills that it can learn/has already, or that you find are really good in a mainly solo strategy.

There are two approaches I think do very well for soloing. Beast spec or Marksmanship spec. If you're going to Beast spec or basically turn your pet into a DPS weapon, then you want a pet with high-dps, obviously. Cats are really great for this with their stealth attack bonus the fact that they can learn claw and bite. If you prefer a pet that can handle a little more damage, a bear can do pretty well in this department as it too can learn claw and bite. Bears are considered tanking pets, but they can do a lot of damage as well. I personally went with marksmanship spec, partially because I like running instances with my guild and pets are slightly less helpful in instances and can cause unintended aggro. I use a scorpid pet myself, but any really solid tanking pet will do. A pet that can learn growl is best because you want your pet to hold aggro even when you're doing massive amounts of damage with your ranged attacks. I like scorpids because of their special ability, poison. Damage-over-time attacks, or DOTs, are great for pvp, where pets aren't always so useful.

Wow, thanks for all that info. I haven't really dedicated myself to a certain way of speccing yet, but the combination of pet and how you spec does seem to be a smart thing to figure out. Thanks for the details!

I believe having a cat is way too good than any other pet out there, especially if you're a night elf. Imagine the number of enemies you're gonna pawn with that combination.

there really is no one "best Pet" out there. They all have pluses and minuses to their abilities. Cats make good pets because they give you mid range stats across the board making them versitle but a Bear or a turtle will soak up damage for you and dish it out good but slow while birds are quicker but don't cause as much damage over time. So try a few different ones or grab one at level 10 and just ride it all the way. It will increase it's levels along with you and be more effictive as it gains new abilities.

I personally like the wolf. It has a good special attack that comes back relatively fast. The moa bird and cat also have a faster recharge on the special attack but it doesn't do as much damage. The bear's special attck is the best attack in the bunch but the recharge time is very long. You can also get a spider which is somewhere between the bird and wolf at far as damage goes. But, they are harder to find.

I like the Wolf but if you want to try another pet i think a raptor would be good my friend says he likes them the best.

I would say only this thing to you. KING BANGALASH FTW 43 elite at STV, the white tiger. It is simply the best pet in the game, especially in pvp.

I would say it depends on u. A wolf or cat is great dps done for a pet, but bears can hold aggro and take some hits for a bit because they have high armor and health. What i did for a while was used a dps pet in instances (high-end instances like Blackwing Lair and Molten Core and the rest) and then pulled my bear out of the stables for soloing. That worked well for me and i'd reccommend it a lot.
