Do you have a vegetable garden?

We bought our house 5 years in the late summer. One of the first things I did was dig a vegetable garden to get ready for the next spring. We have steadily been expanding the size of this garden each season. We now grow tomatoes, peas, beans, cucumbers, pumpkins, carrots, lettuce, rhubarb, and onions. I'd like to try potatoes or corn too, but they take up a lot of room for little return. How about you? Tell me about your garden.

I bought my house at the beginning of summer last year. For various reasons, I haven't been able to do anything besides chop down the weed infested patch of grass. It's currently a flat strip near the house (north wall, so heavily shaded) then a small retaining wall with a steep slope behind that, and another flat strip at the top. The slope is south facing, so there's plenty of sun and the garden is quite sheltered. I plan to dig out the slope and put in another retaining wall to create a 3 tier terrace. Hopefully, this will give me the most useable space. I'd really like to learn more about your veg. garden as you mention the crops I would most like to grow. I've also requsted your 'friendship' so we can discuss this more.

I have a garden too. It has a mango tree, a jackfruit tree and a few coconut trees. Apart from that it has a lot of flowers. I love flowers more than anything. They give me a nice feeling. I try all types of flowers and would like to add more.

I have a small backyard vegetable garden at my place here in the Philippines. I grow tomatoes, "pechay" (local version of Chinese cabbage), cucumber, peppers and papayas. I am trying out bio-intensive gardening (biological as opposed to chemical form of agriculture in which a small area of land is intensively cultivated, using nature's own ingredients).

I live in a small house on a small lot. We have a garden on all sides that will grow anything. Last year I had 10 tomatoe plants, a pumpkin plant, and a bunch of onions. I love to see my work turing in to something I can use. My dream is to be a small scale farmer, but I cant afford the land. For now I just keep dreaming. We are looking for a new home with a larger yard that we can plant more on. Cross your fingers for me.

i have a small back yard but i still manage to make a tiny garden every year. i grow tomatoes, cucumbers and carrots. that's all i have room for and those are my 3 favorite things to eat fresh out of the garden. it's so convenient to just go right outside and pick what you need for the day, i love it. one thing i haven't been able to get that i want to grow though are yellow tomatoes instead of red. i love those better becuase they have less acid in them.

In order to maximize your space, try planting corn and beans together, the corn will grow and make a stalk for the beans to climb. When I was growing up, we always had an ordinary vegetable garden, then a potato patch separately. It eases the work load a little, was easier to weed and dust for insects that way. My hubby and I can't take care of a garden now, but I can use containers and flower beds to grow some tomatoes and lettuce and peppers. I have also maximized space in my garden by planting a patch of lettuce in short rows, closer together than it says to, making a 'bed' of lettuce. I've done radishes, carrots and onions that way too. As long as there's enough space in between plants for it to grow large, it's usually easier to pull the weeds from a small bed than from a long row.
