Bake your own crust or buy prebought?

I like pies, and tarts, and that kind of thing. And I rather enjoy spending time making yummy fillings and cooking down the apples or whatever I do ... I normally try to buck it up and make my own pie or tart crust, but I'm wondering - do you think it's really worth the effort? Or are there certain types of pre-made crusts - whether it be puff pastry sheets or actual pie crusts - that you think are just as good? I'm wondering if anyone would really notice the difference if I skimped here ...

If I'm going to be making a pie (which is rare, I usually do cookies, cakes, or squares instead), I tend to do the whole thing myself from scratch. If you can find good quality premade crusts in the store I don't think anyone would notice the difference, but the typical ones at the big chain grocery stores around here aren't that good.

I don't like the types of pie crusts that are already frozen in a pie tin. They seem sort of floury and mushy, and besides, sometimes I want the crust to be in a different shape! But I've recently discovered that Trader Joe's sells pie crust in flat rounds in the refrigerated section. I like them because they're already soft enough to use and you can cut and shape them however you like. They taste pretty equivalent to what I make at home, too. So to answer your question, I think that if I can get a TJ's crust making my own isn't worth it. However, if I decide to make something on a whim and I'm sort on crust, it's easy enough to whip up homemade in the standing mixer.

We always get the Betty Crocker refrigerator crusts that you roll out and place in the pan. I don't have a lot of time to make home made crusts - and the Betty Crocker crusts are the best non-homemade ones I have found.

I enjoy making my own, but when on the run and not much time, I use frozen flaky Filo (phylo) dough for my pies or cobblers. Works just as well, but sometimes too flaky - LOL.

I prefer store-bought because I'm always afraid it won't turn out like I want if I make it myself. I'm good with baking, but I'm not good with doughs due to my impatience and messiness! :o)

I like to make my own. I don't usually make pastry ones though. I usually match the crust to the pie and make it unique. Ginger Snap crust with pumpkin pie and the such...

I will occasionally bake my own crust, but more often I use store bought. Most of the time I make pie I just don't have time to make my own crust and really I'm not that great at it to begin with. I don't want to ruin a good pie with a crust that may or may not turn out. I am great at making pie fillings and baking other things, but not pie crusts.

I wouldn't notice if you skimped. You could say I buy pre-made crusts, since I usually just buy a whole pre-made pie! But I'm not a great one for cooking at all most days. Growing up I thought making a cake "from scratch" was the same as making it from a box mix... oh, well, thank goodness I'm good at fixing things, I have that to redeem myself. :-)

I always have frozen puff and shortcrust pastry in the freezer and a box of multi-use pastry mix in the cubbard for when Im in a hurry. But Ive never bought pie crusts, these I make myself, they taste alot better. I do prefer to make my own though. Sometimes I think it is alot cheaper and alot less messy when using premade pastry but there arent too many varieties of pastries on the shelf or supermarket freezer so sometimes homemade is best. I can certainly tell when its a bought pastry over a homemade one, but if your willing to spend the money on a top brand pastry (like a butter based one) it can make the pie/tart etc taste better than if you used your own

I refuse to make my own pie crusts. This is mostly because I don't have any counter space in my tiny apartment kitchen. Also, I have seen too many cooking shows where they use the pre-made crusts that you can roll out. Well, if it's good enough for the people on Food TV than it's good enough for me. I do make an effort to dress up the crust by cutting out shapes and adding an egg wash. Another way to make your premade crust look special is to sprinkle a little bit if sugar on top before baking. It will stick nicely to the egg wash. Be careful not to sprinkle too much though because sugar burns really easilly.
