Does your dog watch the TV?

Our dog watches Tv and barks like mad if there is another dog on the screen. He gets quite heated as though the other dog is in the room. He will also bark at other animals like chickens and even a lion although one bite and our Jacko would be gone...!! I was always under the impression that dogs could not make out images on a TV screen. He also recognises the adverts and if one comes on with an animal on he come rushing in the room as though he was chasing it away. Has your dog got this complex?

Yes my Lucy was watching it the other night. It was funny. Animal planet was on. I cant remember what animal was on but Lucy acted like she was really interested in it. It was really cute too.

my dog does not stare at the telly, but my cat does. my dog sits with me when i play games on the laptop and watches me. or if the screen saver is bouncing around she watches it and follows it with her head. i read somewhere that dogs can not see 2 dimensinol (spelling sorry), but its not true when my husband works away she sits near his photo and puts her paw near it.

I alway thought the same as you Missy. That dogs only saw in two dimensions but I suppose they can still see something there. As for him/her missing your husband, if my wife goes out for the evening with friends I always know when shes on her way home because our dog keeps pacing around. 10 or 15 minutes later she rings the doorbell....amazing isn;t it? Thanks for your post.

The only one of my dogs that watches tv is my border collie. He is the smartest of the bunch by far. He will often look at tv and then look at me like he would ask a question if he could speak. He will growl occasionally at another dog or animal. That's when he looks to me for answers. I tell him its ok,but he still has that quizical look on his dear face. So I don't get as big of a reaction as you get from your Jacko, but thier is interest for sure.

Hi Ally, I do know that Border Collies are a very intelligent breed. We have a TV program here in the UK called 'One Man and His Dog' which is about competition sheep herding and those Collies are magnificent, so obedient. But our cross Jack Russell is ...rush here, rush there...wheres it gone...type of character. I love it when he sits there cocking his head just as though he wants to reply. We talk to him a lot. Thanks for posting

LOL! Well I haven't got a dog, but I do have cats, and my one female cat loves sport, on TV, especially snooker! She seems to be fascinated by the ball if it runs very slowly - if they are playing to set up a "snooker" for example. Also, an old cat of ours, used to love animal programmes, especially the ones about "big cats"! She was transfixed by lions and tigers on screen, and I remember once there was a programme about ;ions, and when one of the male lions gave their "mating call", my tiny little tabby girl sat right in front of the screen, and called back!!!

Thats interesting Rosie and I can imagine your cats trying to chase the ball but what would they call a cross lion and cat......? A Liat...?!! Thanks for the visit.

My yorkie Pepito goes crazy over the tv sometimes. Its hilarious. He watches tv and barks at other animals....especially if they bark or meow. Santa Paws even bought him the Garfield dvd because he goes nuts over that movie. I like this question!

My dog has unfortunately passed away, but when I had him in the house he loved to watch Star Trek. He would come bounding into the room every evening as soon as he heard the theme music and he would just sit and stare at the screen. He was a big dog too - a german shepherd, so he often blocked the screen from our view. We often told him to move over but he wouldn't budge, and we ended up have to push him aside. Then he would look at us accusingly, as though we had deprived him of his seat.

When im not around my dog he keeps watching tv and tries to immitate the scenes and barks at the tv. Its very funny that he even has a favourite show. When he sees some dog on tv he gets infuriated and starts barking.

Hi, The idea that dogs couldn't make out tele images comes from US where the flicker rate is lower and dogs may well not be able to see it properly. My dog likes any programme with animals and will try and bite the tele screen. She also likes, snooker, pool, motorcycle racing particularly but will watch anything and everything. She seems to be able to tell if people on screen are getting angry, which makes her hackles go up. I have tried this with the sound down and it still works so I think she must read their body language! all the best urban

Yes, my dog has that complex! It wasn't too bad until my husband started pointing out the animals on the tv to him, and now he just goes nuts every time. He just so wants to get to that puppy and play with it that nothing is going to get in his way - not even the tv screen (which he just bonks his nose against).
