Decorating For The Holidays

My family goes all out when decorating for a holiday and it doesn't matter which one. We have two Christmas trees at Christmas. One is formal and the other is decorated with items my children, friends and family have made. This is the tree that is special to me. I also look for older Christmas decorations at yard sales and estate sales to add to our collection. At Christmas our house is lit up with lights like the Griswold's house in Christmas Vacation. Halloween we build a haunted house and invite people over for a party. It seems to expand from one year to the next. Our yard is decorated with tombstones, witches, cats, skeletons, oh you name it and it is probably out in the yard somewhere. Fourth of July our house could be the headquarters for Uncle Sam with red, white and blue streamers everywhere! Balloons, flags, and food enough to feed an army. I am curious of how other people decorate for the holidays. Do you mix and match or have a theme? Do you collect holiday decorations? How do you store all of your decorations? Do you purchase a lot of your items after the holidays when they are on sale? I really would like to know.

I love to decorate for all holidays :) Some, I go all out... others, it's just a few items to signify the day. Christmas is the most special though. I recently got rid of my second tree because it was HUGE and there was just not enough room to store everything anymore (we renovated our basement last year and our storage area was a bit cramped). I don't have a theme to my tree, unless I would just called it "family." It's filled with decorations that are special to me. There's a Hallmark "age ornament" set that I collected for my first daughter (years 1 through 5), a special glitter egg ornament that bears my other daughter's first baby photo (was made for us as a gift), as well as many old-fashioned glass ornaments that I kept when my mom was going to throw them away and others that I kept and added to my tree after she passed away. I like to use hundreds of lights so it really sets off all the ornaments. It takes me so long to do the tree but I'm always thrilled with it when it's finished :)

It does take a lot of time doesn't it! After January 1st, I usually turn to my husband and say, "We are not doing this next year." : ) Of course we always do and it just keeps growing more and more each year. I don't really do a theme either as I like all different colors outside and inside. There are some who like all clear lights, all blue, etc. I like the multi-colored the best. With our first child I collected teddy bear ornaments, with the second it was trains and the third it was rocking horses. I plan to give the collections to them when they are older and have their own trees. : ) I think it is a nice tradition to start for them. I would LOVE to see your collection of old-fashioned glass ornaments! I bet they are gorgeous! If you ever get an opportunity to upload it, please do let me know.
