A carhop is a waiter or waitress on rollerskates who brings food to people in their cars. Carhops originated in the 1950s when drive-in eateries were popular. Are there any places now that still does this?

I remember carhops and miss them, as this area doesn't have any. My brother and I would double date and he loved to see how fast our carhop could skate, as he would send her back for more items. One particular evening, we brought my brother's best friend to meet the carhop and now we tell everyone how we set them up on a date, as they have been married 30 years now.

That is so sweet. So I'll bet everytime a carhop comes to mind you think of them. +

I remember these, and places like A&W. Last I knew, we still had an A&W and one other place that did something like this still in our area, but they are becoming Far and few between anymore. I think it ios due to the Insurance clause for the Company if someone gets hurt. But those were the Good ole days when there was definately less worries. I guess it will always be some Great memories to hold on too.

This is a new information for me. I have not heard of it before. But I have seen it many movies I suppose. But, I am yet to see it in real life. Moreover I don't own a car, nor do I drive. So I have not got a chance to visit any drive in restaurants.

True. There would be no place for her to deliver your food.

i dont know if there are still places that still do this, but i remember a movie made by jacky chan, i think the title was 'wheels on meals', where he and his friends have a van that goes around the city to bring food to the people. he did deliver using roller skates.

There is a place near me called Stewarts Rootbeer. When they built the building a couple years ago, they wanted to have carhops as well as sit down inside space. But our township wouldn't allow it. I guess it had something to do with liability. So now the restaurant just has the indoor eating space.

Too bad they couldn't bring that back now a days. Maybe they are afraid people will not pay and drive off. Thanks for your reply.

Thats the way the drive in worked back in my home town when it was operating. The burgers were huge. You turned on the lights for service and to let them know you were finished the burger trays were reused.

Talk about full service. I love watching the old movies when they used the rollar skates to serve the food. Thanks.

About 20 years ago the wife and I actually looked into buying an old A & W with the overhangs for carhop service but decided against it. Anyhow in St Paul Minnesota we have a Porky's Drive In. Yes the same name as the movies. But not affiliated with the movie. Their insignia is a huge pink Boars head. It's located on University Ave a huge and busy street. They have many car shows near by and all the old 50's and 60's cars drive/cruise the streets the congegrate at Porky's. They have skater chicks still also there. The speakers that hang on your window like the drive-in speakers also. The tray hung on a slightly opened window. Now I think I'll hit Porky's this Friday possibly if theirs a show going on anyhow. The thing I really miss are drive ins though. Thanks. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Thank you Grandpa Bob for telling me about this. Sounds like a cool place. It looks like back in the day the car hop places were lots of fun and a place where everyone loved going to. If only we could turn back the hands of time. Enjoy yourself if you get to go on Friday.
