My favorite cake is a homemade version of a black forest cake. It's just a regular chocolate layer cake with kool-whip instead of frosting and a layer of cherry pie filling between the cake layers. It is fabulous (and now I want a slice!)...

for a birthday cake, i always like it in chocolate flavor. a rocky road or chocolate marble will be good. mocca would be an alternative choice of flavor too. i always prefer it homemade but because birthdays makes me too busy for other preparations, i just have to settle to get them from the shops.

My favorite! Vanilla Bean Lemon Birthday Cake 1 3/4 sticks unsalted butter, slightly softened (1 stick = 1/2 cup) 2 C. sugar 1 vanilla bean, split Grated zest of 4 lemons 4 extra-large eggs, at room temperature 3 C. all-purpose flour 1/2 t. baking powder 1/2 t. baking soda 1 t. kosher salt 1/4 C. fresh lemon juice 3/4 C. buttermilk, at room temperature 1 t. pure vanilla extract Lemon Icing 2 1/2 C. powdered sugar 1 T. unsalted butter, at room temperature 1 T. fresh lemon juice 2 T. hot milk pinch of salt Preheat the oven to 350¡F. Spray a 10 x 5 1/4-inch loaf pan with baker's spray. Line the pan with a long piece of parchment and spray that, too. It's OK if the parchment hangs over the sides of the pan. Combine the butter and all but 1 tablespoon of the sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Beat until light and fluffy. The mixture will lighten in color until almost white. Sprinkle the 1 tablespoon of sugar onto the split and opened vanilla pod; scrape out the seeds using a small knife. Add half of the vanilla seed/sugar to the butter mixture; reserve the remainder. Stir in the lemon zest. Beat in the eggs, 1 at a time. Sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt onto a piece of wax paper. Combine the lemon juice, buttermilk and vanilla extract in a small bowl. Add the dry ingredients alternately with the liquid ingredients to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Remove the bowl from the mixer and use a spatula to give a couple of last folds from the bottom of the bowl. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and tap lightly on the countertop. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, until the cake pulls away from the sides of the pan and a tester comes out clean when inserted into the center of the cake. Transfer the pan to a rack and let cool for 10 minutes, then turn the cake out onto a rack set over a tray. For the lemon icing: Put the powdered sugar and butter in a small bowl. Pour the lemon juice and hot milk over them and whisk until smoothly blended. Whisk in the pinch of salt and the reserved vanilla/sugar. Spoon the icing over the cake and spread it over the sides. Note: I like to cut thick slices of the cake and surround with strawberries and raspberries that have been tossed with vanilla syrup. If you are serving the cake with fruit, you can delete the icing and serve the slices au natural.

I never buy birthday cakes I always make my own, they ususally consits of a sponge cake decorated to suit the ice cream cake theme Ive made for the kids. The last differently flaoured ice cream cake I made was a Black Forest Ice Cream cake for my daughter, she loved it. her birthday is due again soon so Im on the hunt for another flavour for her and her other teen friends.

Oh ice cream cakes are easier than people think. They just take alot longer - as in a few days to get it right. They mainly consist of a normal vanilla flavoured ice cream which is partly melted, you mash it with a potato masher to make it softer, add the other ingredients required, put it in a cake tin, then freeze it again. When its frozen solid again (about 12-18 hours) you take it outta the freezer, run a hot cloth around the cake tin so it'll slide out of the tin, put it on a nice serving tray, refreeze for a few hours, then wella serve your yummy ice cream cake up.....

I love homemade chocholate cake :) Most of the cakes I eat (when I eat cakes, it is only a few times a year) is home made. I think the store bought cakes are too sweet.

I love the McCains cakes you can get in the stores . They would be one of my favorites but if we have money and it is a birthday I would prefer to get one from a woman in our area who makes and decorates homemade cakes . She has a real gift for making them taste as good as they look .When she does them like this I would say I like the chocolate and the marble flavour equally .

Hmm well lets see I think my favorite flavor is vanilla or marble cake. I never buy store bought cake, I prefer homemade. Every birthday I've ever had me and my sister get together aprons and all and bake our famous cakes. I like the taste of homemade better, and its fun doing too.

Here in the Philippines, there's a bakery chain called Goldilocks who has great cakes. My favorite is the chocolate marble with white icing. The icing is almost like marshmallow cream. The marble is a mix of chocolate and vanilla and it has a buttercream filling. Mocha is good as well. In the US, I like carrot cake and cream cheese frosting. I don't like the grocery chain cakes.

Nothing beats a mean chocolate cake! But i don't bake, my husband does. But i don't mind buying cakes in a bakeshop, less trouble. I just top the cake with the character that my kid wants at the moment.

I love two cakes. The cake from the Italian bakery with real whipped cream and strawberry and pineapple filling, yummy! Also Dominican cakes are very good. I prefer a bakery care as opposed to homemade. I am not a good baker anyway!
