Do you start moving your hands when you cant find the right word? Does gesturing while you talk improve your access to language? Are gestures related to meaning or language?

I don't know if it is a help to anyone or not but I do this , I just can't talk without my hands going . I even do it when Iam on the telephone and my hubby thinks it is so silly lol , especially if I am giving someone directions xx

I am one of those people who always talks with her hands. Sometimes I think it helps emphasize something comical or helps me express what emotion I'm trying to convey. I've actually decided to try and do this less and instead emphasize my voice inflection instead. I also use gestures as a space filler when I'm trying to think of a word, sort of like using "um." Interesting question. I wonder if there is some 'hidden' meaning in the way one uses hand gestures and whether it follows cultural mores.

Hand gestures are all part of the skill of body language, positive body language can be used to show confidence, by rubbing the hands together or to show assertiveness and that you are in control of a situation, it can also help trigger memory recall, if you have the art! But making sure the wrong hand signals are not used to convey wrong signals to people, aggressiveness and 'effiminancy'

I believe hand gestures are a habit we pick up on and may express more of how we feel when we are excited or very upset about something and can't seem to find a way to get the words out fast enough . I don't believe it improves our access to the language .

Hand gestures are actually a habit people pick up. But if you use hand gestures while speaking they can emphisize a point you're trying t make.
