During a debate last night between my boyfriends family they came to the conclusion the majority of the reason Lincoln freed the slaves was so that they would fight in the war with them. I hope this was not the main reason, but unfortunalty I think they are right. But I am not history guru so I am hoping someone has a much better answer for me!

Who said Lincoln freed the slaves!? "Abraham Lincoln is often referred to as "The Great Emancipator" and yet, he did not publicly call for emancipation throughout his entire life. Lincoln began his public career by claiming that he was "antislavery" -- against slavery's expansion but not calling for immediate emancipation." Bills Lincoln (when he was a senator signed) At the age of 28, while serving in the Illinois General Assembly, Lincoln made one of his first public declarations against slavery. March 3, 1837 The following protest was presented to the House, which was read and ordered to be spread on the journals, to wit: "Resolutions upon the subject of domestic slavery having passed both branches of the General Assembly at its present session, the undersigned hereby protest against the passage of the same. They believe that the institution of slavery is founded on both injustice and bad policy; but that the promulgation of abolition doctrines tends rather to increase than to abate its evils. They believe that the Congress of the United States has no power, under the constitution, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the different States. They believe that the Congress of the United States has the power, under the constitution, to abolish slavery in the District of Columbia; but that that power ought not to be exercised unless at the request of the people of said District. The difference between these opinions and those contained in the said resolutions, is their reason for entering this protest." Dan Stone, A. Lincoln, Representatives from the county of Sangamon There are many more I can't post here (room)... but Lincoln was against the EXPANSION of slavery. That in itself would nullify freeing the slaves to fight the war. Speech at Chicago, Illinois July 10, 1858 "I have always hated slavery, I think as much as any Abolitionist. I have been an Old Line Whig. I have always hated it, but I have always been quiet about it until this new era of the introduction of the Nebraska Bill began. I always believed that everybody was against it, and that it was in course of ultimate extinction. I have said a hundred times, and I have now no inclination to take it back, that I believe there is no right, and ought to be no inclination in the people of the free States to enter into the slave States, and interfere with the question of slavery at all." In a quip... I have always hated slavery but where it is let it be and where it is not let it not be there.

I don't think any man should have control of another man without that person willing. I think that slavery is complete BS and that it gave white people a very unrespectable reputation. Thatnkyou for the information and now tonight I can tell them what I found out.

Black troops in the Union army were not encouraged or truly wanted by the army. They were wanted only to do labor to enable the army to move against the south.

Lol! I don't think he would have won any prize during a war and all. But im sure that he ended up in heaven and gods thanking him for releasing his people, because the only person who should govern anyone is god. And he probably would have kicked Lincolns behind if he didn't change that!

The Southern Slaves were freed to reduce the workforce in the south. It was designed to give the free black man a reason to leave the Plantation and come north to deprive the south of resources. They did not free slaves in the northern states.

but should we start discussing history and find out about the slavery or are we to free ourselves from the bonds of past and think of a bright future
