How come most women will gain weight after they had a baby, and even more so after 50?

I think something about our metabolism changes after having a baby. And then changes more after hitting a cerain age. LOL I think if a man had this problem, then they would have already found a way to stop it from happening. LOL As also, if a man had stretch marks from pregnancy, they would have found a cure for that also! LOL

Could be because right after a baby is born is the time you have to get your self back in shape because there are also muscles that need to be tightened up again and with new baby a lot of women dont have time to diet and go to a gym plus they have not been careful during their pregnancy and put on too much weight. Over 50 is because their metabolism has slowed down. I say 'could be' as I am no expert on the subject.

Well I can't say I've done either of these recently but I have put a few kilos on during the school holidays as I seem to be sancking all day. School went back today (awwww) and I joined a gym so there is my first step to losing that extra roll on the tummy! (I just have to get myself to the gym to workout now)

During pregnancy you add pounds around your internal organs to prepare for the baby. With maturity your metabolism often changes, you are moving less, probably backpacking, lugging the kids laundry etc and so eating the same you put on poundage. Another vote and proof we need to be aware of ourselves and how we are adapting and changing over the years.

I think alot of it has to do with metabolism changes. We tend to forget about this and the weight goes on. I know when I exercise and this boost my metabosism, I can start loosing weight again. I have to start watching what I eat too.

I don't have children so that one I can't answwer- but after 50....well welcome to menopause, it runs extremely early in my family and I have been going through it for about 5 years now, your body changes drastically when you start this horrible thing women must endure. I have gained weight and according to my husband become a raving phsycopath!! LOL Your metabolism slows down when just starting pre-menopause which causes the weight gain.

I am wondering if it is just our metabolism or something else. I really have to watch my weight and watch what foods I eat. when I was younger I could eat anything I wanted to and always stayed thin.

Well in a lot of cases and this is only what I have come across several times, some Women when they have Kids seem to think that now they have had a Child they don't need to watch their weight as they have had a Child so to them that is an Excuse to let themselves go on the weight Side, but with others that I have known no matter what they do, they just can't get the weight back down.

I was always very thin before I had my babies and even though I'm not what most people would classify as "fat", I do weigh quite a bit more then I did before the babies came along. A couple of things caused that for me ... first of all when I was pregnant, I thought that I could eat anything since I was "eating for two". I developed very bad habits and snacked too frequently. When the babies were born I still ate as though I was pregnant. Another thing that happened was that I couldn't just drop everything for a game of floor hockey, softball, basketball or whatever. I needed to stay home with the kiddos or find a babysitter to watch them. I haven't hit fifty yet, so I'm not real sure what happens at that point!

I don't know about after having a child, but I think for after the age of 50, our metabolisms slow down and we need to be more active to keep them burning more calories. It seems that it is often harder to get more exercise as we age. I think the secret to weight reduction is an increase in body metabolism, and not a starvation diet. A change in the type of foods we eat is also essential. Moderate activity can increase the rate that calories are burned and that fat is changed into muscle.

Al those wonderful recipes you shared with us and you are asking why we gain weight ? :)))) I am only over 40 and I noticed that I am eating more and excercising less. I think with spring coming I may start to excercise more outside. I will still eat and snack so please continue to do your recipes. I just need to excercise more. Thats maybe the case with other woman too ?? Maybe we just fail to excercise as much as we did.

Actually, In my opinion, having a baby is not the major reason why married woman gain weight.. The common reaction to a family problem or stress is comfort eating... Another factor is gaining weight during pregnancy, then there is, women, when married, they are too comfortable with the relationship plus they become less active..

Gaining weight after pregnancy can be due to the fact that most women eat a lot more during pregnancy. Their metabolism gets used to eating for two, so it´s hard to eat less after childbirth. After 50 it´s usually to do with menopause and the hormonal change involved in it. That could be one reason and the other one is probably that metabolism slows down with age. Some women actually loose weight after 50, my mother did. She lost almost all of her curves. I´m off to bed, it´s 2 in the morning here. Blessings Dana

I gained weight after I had my daughter and it is very hard to get back off. they say that our metabolism slows way down after giving child birth and it also come with age. Some women lose all their baby fat after giving birth. Some elderly women lose weight as they age. I think it all has to do with your body's metabolism.
