Boxer for Politics?? Maybe you know him??

Do you know MANNY "PACMAN" PAQUIAO?? He is my Idol and one of few persons that gave way to fame and heroism in my country. Man he sure could punch and knockout his opponents on the ring . But recently he is running for congressman. And I know that some politicians influenced him because he has the heart of the people,he is known by many and he will be a great asset for them. But in my own opinion I think he shouldn't be there. Politics in my country is so dirty and I don't want a very good clean man to go down the drain with the filthy ones. What do you think he should do?? What do you think is best for him??

i think boxing is what's best for manny but since he's made up his mind in runninng for congressman, either don't vote or if you want to give him a chance, go vote for him and just pray later on that he'll smarten up and use his position only to the people in need and not himself.

don't pass. someone might vote for you. then your "vote" will be wasted. i have missed several elections already since i was always out of the country. i was expecting my name to be taken out of the registered voters list in our district. but guess what? my name was still there. maybe, just maybe, somebody else has been voting for me. this coming elections, i sure am going to vote. by the way, i'll post another response regarding your main topic :)

I am from the Philippines as well. Anyway, for me congressmen have a very heavy responsibility for the people, legislating new laws, representing their fellow countrymen etc. I for one like him as a boxer but here are my major reasons why he shouldn't run for congress... 1. He can't barely speak English and we know for a fact that English is the main language used in congress. How can he even participate in debates, issues etc. when he can't even express himself using this language? My proof for this are the moments he's interviewed after winning fights in boxing....he can't even answer the emcees very well...it's just a question and answer type what more a full debate? 2. He's not well versed with the Philippine laws. My proof for this is when he was interviewed by the press regarding boxing affecting his political position....he said that he's willing to give up his boxing career IF the laws demand it. Seriously, it just shows that he doesn't even know if that is allowed or not in our laws...something a future legislator should know. Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to put a man down or that I doubt his being selfless or whatever, but if he really wants to serve his country, it's better for him to just be a good citizen. I believe that you don't need a government position to serve your country but if he really thinks that he can make a difference, he can run as a mayor or have any position in the local government. All he needs to do there are: be a good leader, a good citizen and love your province with all your heart....these are the things he's already doing so I doubt it that he will fail.

I think he should stay in boxing and probably fight and knock-out the top boxer in his weight category and class, coz that what he does the best. I may even consider him if he is running only for a local position (governor or mayor), but congress, wow that's a big deal. I have nothing against Manny, I'm also a great fan of him and I'm proud of what he did for the country, but the role and function of congressman (making and legislating laws) is very complicated and needed some brain and knowledge, and not only hearts and emotion.

Absolutely right. I guess he was just pulled by his emotions and his willingness to help our people and our country. But sad to say he drifted at the wrong side of the river with the wrong people with him. Thanks for your reply tholitz.

yeah, i was shocked when i saw him on tv doing his pledge for the liberal party.its not really a good idea for him to join the politics. i dont think it will look good if a congressman is seen fighting inside the boxing ring, more so if he looses the fight!

Yes I didn't believe it either until my father told me about the news. My father wasn't happy too about Manny's decision. I guess almost all of us are not in favor of him running for congress. Thanks for replying.

Yes.. pinoy ako kaya I know manny very well... yes he is very good in boxing... but the problem is, getting involved in politics is I guess a wrong move... He said he wanted to join politics kasi he wanted to help... If a person is very much willing to help.. I guess with his millions, he does not need the budget of the government to help... Like what most of the sports analysts say, Manny is in the peak of his career... boxing is not a life-long career.. If he really wanted to serve filipino people... he can do that at the age of 40.... but I guess not now... He is helping Filipinos by uplifting our spirits especially everytime he wins a fight... Thanx sourgrapes... have a nice day!

Right!! And I'm more interested in is upcoming fight than in his running stint in politics. Issues and gossips might bring him down. I sure do hope that it won't affect him that much before his big fight.

Well for me, if he don't want to mess his life and even his family he must not go in politics...He should use the talent that God gave to him. He should be contented with his life. If I were him I will just help the less fortunate in the way that I can without being a politician. He is just being used by greed politicians and he is being used to pursue their propaganda to eliminate those who are against the present administration...I hope I can raise this question to Manny Paquio, "Why are you running for congressman, what is your main purpose? You're already famous, and if you want to help the people can't you help without entering the politics?"

That's a good idea for him to do. But since politics here is so influential he is politically clouded by the promises and lies that politicians induced him of. Politics is so frustrating in our country. Thanks for the response.

Thanks for your news, I have just heard form your saying. How strong he can do! How did he learn to be strong and fame. I like to be strong and win as he does.He can stay as he is better than do some thing else.

I am from the same country as you are. But I am shocked to hear that Pacquiao will run in the congress. I heard that there have been invitations but I didn't really actually heard the news in the television. Well anyways, I have to agree with you. He has a different field and he should stay on his field. If he really wants to serve the people there are several ways to do so which doesn't include politics.

Hi there, sourgrapes77!:) I'm also from the Philippines, and I'm really very disappointed of Manny Pacquiao running for Congress this coming May elections. At first, I thought he was just gonna run for a lower position -to which I'm already frustrated about it- but to run for a higher office is not like just selling peanuts on the streets. I think the least qualification there to be a congressman is to have atleast a degree on college, which is very far from what he's attained (a Highschool undergraduate). Has his mind already gone crazy, venturing on something that he's not used of? Gosh, I know somebody's been using him and dictating to run this coming election, I hope they prove to themselves the worthiness Pacqiuao could give in congress..

I just hope he gets all the necessary support he needs and not by just using him as a display. Thanks for the response raijin.

I don't think it's a good idea to use popularity alone to run for office. He shouldn't win. He barely knows anything about politics. I hear the guy can't even read or write that well. I'm sorry but I'm against popular people who run for politics. They are making our country poorer and poorer.

I think Manny should not run for election. He is good as a boxer but I think he is not good to become a leader. He is my idol also. It would be better if he remain as a boxer and have a good image.

I think it's better for him to stay away from politics and stick to boxing. But I believe it's too late because he already filed for candidacy. Many people do look up to him and politics could break him. I hope he wouldn't be used by traditional politicians... but I doubt it.

It is not too late. If you are the symphatizer of pacman just don't vote him. In that way, you help him not to used by traditional politicians.

hello sourgrapes. He should not go fo it. I know Pacman have heart of the people. I know he can win but for his own good he shall not go for it. That decision may pull him down alongwith his boxing carrer. For me Pacman should concentrate on his field. Coz we all know here in the Philippines, politics are so dirty.

Im also from the same country and I really hate to hear about it. Manny is our country's hero because of boxing, he must not use this popularity to join politics. he better stay with boxing or may lose people's respects for him.

I don't think he should involve himself in politics. But people are greedy for power and he is not an exception as shown by his willingness to run for congressman. He should just concentrate in his boxing field and help the youngsters to improve the field.

I think he has every right in the Philippines to run for office for he is qualified in the Philippine Constitution. I think he must reconsider his candidacy for politics is a very big responsibility and his experience and credibility is not enough to uphold the people's trust

I think this is the worst move he's ever made in his life. He doesn't realize that the gov't is just riding on his popularity, that having him in their party will pull them up, but it will only pull him down. Even his mother and his coach are against him running. But too late, he has already filed his candidacy. Maybe his fans in the district he's running for should act as one and not vote for him.

I think he'll just ruin his reputation. he shouldn't have made that move, running for congress. What does he know. I bet he didn't even finish his college. Gosh what's happening to the Philippines? .
