Should Pologamy Be Legalized?

United States
February 14, 2007 9:47am CST
Within the past year or so, the wives of pologamyist have joined together to become a voice in legalizing pologamy at both state & national levels. They note that it is their constitutional right to choose this way of life; as well as; their right to live according to their religious belief relevant to a man having multiple wives. Individual moral issues aside .... What do you think? Should pologamy be legalized for these reasons, or is there "more to it", from a legal standpoint, that should be considered?

Let it up to the individual to decide. If all the women in the relationship agree with it why not. I wouldn't want to be a part of it but if others do more power to them. They aren't hurting anybody

Thanks for the contribution! I totally agree that everyone has a right to choose their lifestyle. Because of the potential prosecution involved, the largest majority hide the fact that they do choose this lifestyle and therefore I wonder how deeply happy they are with their choice. Know what I mean? It must be extremely difficult for them to totally "handle" their life choice.

Before you decide take a look at Colorado City and their polygamy practices. It is a city that is strictly populated by FLDS Polygamists. Many of the men, in order to have multiple wives, marry their very young nieces, cousins, etc. and force them to bare children. Here is a link you may find interesting, read it and then make up your mind. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_Jeffs

That would cause a lot of problems. If you watch programs where women have left this situation you will here how a lot of them are already on welfare. Each woman qualifies for foodstamps and cash to support her kids. If make this legal for them can you imagine how many men are going to claim that religion so they can have more than one woman. Or get married to a new person without divoreing the first just because they don't want the finacial burden of a divorce. Then you will have the gays demanding that they shoud be able to get married. Then you will have women saying men can marry more than one person we want that right also. I see it as causing a lot of fights amoung differnet groups and sexes. Not a good idea.

They women are not allowed to work so are not paying anything in. They also believe in having has many kids as possible. Most of these men have 20 or 30 kids. Do you think they have paid enough in for the government to support all of them?

Thanks for the contribution! I can understand your comment on the women having to resort to the welfare system, but I wonder if it's really any different that any other woman in any relationship that has to resort to the same? And, if these women; and/or their husband's; paid into the system, is it wrong for them to then use the system for it's purpose? Should they not be able to simply because of their choice of lifestyle?

It doesn't do much for the marriage vows. Should these be rewritten? What about the children? What happens to them if there is a divorce? Multiple wives means multiple children. How can he afford to raise so many families? Keep in mind the country is run by the Christians, this goes against their beliefs. We can cow tail to everyone. Just think of the health issues, diseases passed on to more than one wife, is that fair? Their tax return would look interesting.

Thanks for the contribution! Well, divorce; for them; would be no different than a monogomous relationship. Some adults who practice pologamy were; in fact; raised in the same practice. Raising "so many families" isn't really so different than raising a one wife family with alot of children. As for diseases, the greatest majority of these marriages consist of wives who entered into the relationship as virgins. And I believe having read at one time that the rate of sexually transmitted diseases is extremely low in these relationships compared to those of monogomous relations & individuals.

Well I don't see who it is affecting in a negative way if all parties are consensual. I don't believe the government should have any say in who we can or cannot marry, even if that means the person is already married. I would not want to take part in this, but some people are okay with it, so I can't see where the problems come from. I think it should be legalized.

r u kidding me??? of course it can't be done... having multiple partners is just nothing else but a kinda insanity... whatever religion says we shouldn't give it a damn!!! the population of world is increasing and we must not tolerate things like that... i would say that pologamy should be made punishable...

so..Polygamy....I don't really agree with it myself, but as long as ALL parties involved are sane adults, know the deal and are perfectly, 100% okay with the arrangement, then I think it's their business. I don't see how it hurts anyone as long as, like I said, everyone invovled knows it's a polygamous relationship, and have no objections to it..only community can think.

I think marriage should be outlawed. Marriage is stupid. Animals do not marry, neither should humans, marriage is not natural.

I think it should not be for it will create more complications on more family if it is being legalized the man will have the right not to control himself to fall inlove to other girl and it will really lead the family to suffer for financial support if he has 2 or more family and the children will suffer more.

Taking a humourous viewpoint to your question, I would say, as of now we are finding it difficult to relate a lady with her partner, like whether she is Mrs.X or Y or Z. And if polygamy is legalised the she would have to vbe called as Mrs.XYZ, all have to mentioned as you know

WEll, my first take at this is that as long as everyone involved agrees with that way of living it shouldn't be an issue. I"m not sure I would want to be in that situation, but who am I to judge it? I actually can see some benefits from such a "family arrangement" - if I don't count with the fact that we are all human and prone to human things like jealousy and competition and things like that. I mean think about a big family, where even if one mom is sick or away for some reason the children still have the support of "mother figure" inside the family circle, where some can be working to support the family and some can stay home with the children full time.. well some positive things come to mind... As I said if all involved agree with that arrangement, I don't see why other people or even the government should prevent it.

Hey! Personally i think this shouldn`t even exist . I mean .. i know there are some women who can be ok .. in some way .. knowing that their husband is in the other room with another woman .. and that they`re categorized by .. which is first or second .. or i don`t know how many wifes a man can get where this is legal .. But how about your feelings .. how can i love somebody who`s cheating on me day by day .. how can i give birth to his child .. when he might be having one with another one too .. how can i hear the words "I love you" from his mouth when i know that he`s telling it to other women too .. and i`m aware of that .. I don`t say that men don`t cheet on their wifes .. and yes .. once you might forgive him .. but after that .. God .. there are still men on this planet .. we`ve got to move on .. not to accept being shared with don`t know who ..

In short, no it shouldn't that is just nuts. I really think it would be endorsing abuse in relationships. People who conscent to their only partner having more than one partner must have zero self esteem.

No. I do not believe so. One is enough. One is right for keeping relationships healthy. Now to be fair, how would you feel about two men for each wife?

I think it should not be legal, what's the point? Why would any woman in her right mind want to share her husband with other women. She might as well stay single and be free to date a bunch of men. If it was legal how would the man file his state taxes how many wives could he claim. What would happen if he wants to divorce one of his wives, would she have any rights? Who would pay her child support? The man or the wives or both. It sounds to confusing to be legal.

I think they should live the way they want. I don't believe in it and I definitely wouldn't take part in it but if that's the way they want to live their lives then so be it. I watch that show Big Love on HBO and even though I don't believe in it I like the show. I find it fascinating that these women don't mind sharing their husband with each other. I couldn't stand to share my husband with another woman. :)

I don't think it should be legalized. I just believe a man should be married to more than one at a time. Some of these marriages happen when the girls are so young and I think they just get stuck in these situations. I think we should stick with only one wife.

Keep church and state separate because that's what it boils down to.
