My mother in law tapes her favorite ones when she can't be home on time to watch them. A coworker speeds home to see them. Hubby's aunt doesn't answer the phone while her soap operas are on. WHat's makes them so appealing? I don't have the patience to watch them, but many people live for them. What's your take on soap operas?

Know what you mean. I think that, like it was said in the response above, they are trying to include other topics and stories in what could be a different kind of soap opera appealing to different groups of people.

Soap operas are being disguised by the TV networks so more people will watch.Lost,Jerico,Ghost Whisperer and other shows are actually soaps as they build on previous episodes by using continual cliff-hangers each week. The main soap opera I watch is RAW (at least I consider it to be a soap as well).

OH yes... I see that happening. THey have to keep their audiences and that is a good way to do so. I think I make a bit more distinction between for example days of our lives and Ghost Whisperer because one continues the same story day after day and the other presents a new story each time ( as a rule ). But I do know what you mean. I Love some weekly series and watch them when I can or am in the mood for tv, but I know that if I miss one or 10 the next time I watch I can still enjoy a full story that doesn't have any thing to do with the last one I saw. I include Ghost whisperer,House, NCIS, and all the CSI's in this group. SOme I really like but don't watch at all until the video with the whole season comes out.Just because I really like the story itself but don't have the patience to follow it week after week. SO I wait for the video and then watch the whole season. In this group i include Lost and prision brake for example. That's the case of Lost

i do, i have to accept im totally addicted to soaps. Here in the UK im watching Coronation street and Emerdale. Why? well to me its because they deal very intimately with personal relationships that generally go on behind closed doors. Its vouyeristic but i love it blessed be

I can understand the part where it appeals to people for the reasons you state. It's just the patience to watch day after day that fails me :) I"m glad you enjoy them, it's things that give us some pleasure doing that become important, no matter what they are.

lol i cant stand soap operas! they are so over-dramatic and frequently over-acted that i get annoyed within the first 5 mins. ive tried watching them a couple of times with friends, to see if i just wasnt giving them a proper chance. but i couldnt take it and had to leave! lol i would rather watch the incredibly boring "court tv" shows than soap operas!

LOL know what you mean. Some are really annoying others could actually be interesting but I don't have the patience to wait forever until something else is new :) I visited hubbies aunt around Christmas time she was watching one of her favorite soap operas and I watched a bit with her. Last weekend I visited her again... guess what nothing much had changed in that same soap opera in all this time. I was able to easily catch up on what was going on and there were no new developments of note in what was happening LOL

I've thought about why they are so appealing for so many people sometimes. I think that they show a romantic side of life, part imaginary part real, that we would all like to have in our lives. People that make decissions strictly by heart, that are honest with their feelings, that would do anything for love....things that we don't always do in real life.

Yes, you are quite right. AS for me I really like to live with both feet on the floor and if I"m dreaming of a more romantic approach, I'd rather follow my own soaop opera then, not some character's on tv hehe
