If the US goverment made it a madate that all able bodied people(all races, educational backgraound, rich or poor) at the age of 18 had to volunteer in a program (daycare, nursinghome, hospitial etc...)for 2 years; do you think it would make people appreciate what others go through?

If you could do this as a way to pay back you student lians or something while being provided with housing, food, and so on it would work. I'm applying for such a program, actually. It's called the Good Sheppard Volunteers. You donate a year of service. They pay for EVERYTHING- housing, healthcare, food, ultilities, transit. You do a minimum 200 hours service a month; you meet someone who approves your service schedule each month.

What you're referring to his the debate over mandatory civil service out of high school. It's not inconceiveable because most European countries require it of their kids when they graduate. Most associate civil service with joining the military, but there are many many more jobs out there. You could have a desk job at some government office or even deliver mail. I personally would not be opposed to the idea. I think too many people (including myself) take for granted the things we have in this country. We would be able to give something back if we all went and worked for 2 years out of high school. And when we were done, we'd just start our college careers like normal but now with 2 years of work experiance and hopefully increased maturity.

There are many, many high schools requiring community service hours in order to graduate now. My daughter attends one of them and my son graduated from that same school. They each had to have 80 hours of community service. I think that it has enhanced their ability to understand the types of things that affect people's lives and has helped them to realize that it's a good thing to give back to the community.

I don't think there is any way they could do this. A lot of 18 year olds are getting jobs, moving out on their own, or going to school full time. Many times they are doing both, going to school and working. When would they have time to volunteer? How would they support themselves while they volunteer? Don't misunderstand me, I am all for volunteering. My 14 year old and I volunteer at a local animal shelter on the weekends. But my 19 year old lives on her own and works full time. She does not have time to volunteer.
