Within the last couple days grocery stores have had to pull Peter Pan, and Great Value peanut butter off the shelves. It's one of those foods that most of us parents feed our children on a semi-regular basis. The sad part is that salmonella, the culprit of all this, can be fatal to children and infants. How does salmonella get into a factory where foods are made? What measures are going to made to ensure that these kinds of things don't happen anymore? Are you or do you know someone who was affected by this infection? I live in a town where there were already 9 cases reported.

I just heard on our local news that there have been 5 confirmed cases in our county. My mother told me today that she has 2 jars of the Peter Pan with the Lot# that is supposed to be "tainted" and is mailing the jar lids in for a rebate. 1/2 of one jar is gone, the other is new. My 81 year old father is the only one who eats it, but he has not become ill. It's the very young and the very old who are most at risk, so I thank God that he didn't get sick. From what I understand, salmonella has not been positively identified in any product, but the peanut butter is the only common denominator in all of the cases. It's hard to imagine how salmonella would even get into a peanut factory. This one will be interesting as it unfolds. Oh, good- there is finally something to put on the news in place of Anna Nicole Smith!

This is SAD that they can allow this in foods. Last yr. it was the Salads with the Spinache, and then this yr. already it is the Peanut Butter. Sounds like someone needs to go around checking out places more, and putting stricter Health Codes on all of the food. Maybe someday this will start to make the Health officials of the Foods start paying more attention, and prevent things like this in the future. We can only Hope I guess. Just glad we did not buy any Peanut Butter from this brand, as we Love Peanut Butter here ourselves.

I'd suggest more food inspectors checking up on these plants to make sure they are following basic hygeine. It's like when all the e coli was being found in spinach and sprouts. There are no inspectors looking at these farms and making sure there are washroom facilities for the people doing the picking, so the food ends up being contaminated.

My son and I have been dealing with stomach problems for quite a few months now. I thought we had a flu bug that we kept getting over and getting back again. Then yesterday I find out about the peanut butter recall. Of course I only buy great value and both of my jars that I now have, do have the 2111 numbers. Out of 5 people in our family, my son and I are the only two who have been having problems, and we are also the only ones who will eat peanut butter, everyone else says, yuk! So I have to send my lids to the company for reimburesment. Unfortunatly I have no health insurance, so I cannot go and find out if I have salmonella or not, however my son does have an insurance due to him being disabled, so we can have him tested and if he is okay, then I'm sure I am too. The only way I can see that this could happen with peanut butter is from dirty machinery. At this point, I'm not sure how I feel about this. I do hope that if I have this infection that the company pays my medical cost.

It did upset me when I heard about this...I suppose the company that produces Peter Pan peanut butter had better figure out another say to make money..because it's not going to be from their peanut butter. I never buy Peter Pan, or Great Value peanut butter, I buy Jiff, or peanut butter from the health food store. But that dosn't mean that these products won't be affected. I wonder what caused the peanut butter to be bad? The peanuts? The butter? It just makes me want to go and live in a cave somewhere..well, far away from grocery stores, and just make all my own food. It's pretty scary any more, it seems anything can be tainted these days. I don't put much stock in whoever or whatever it is that is supposed to keep this from happening...I wonder what can I do to keep my family safe?

by pulling it off the shelf they have taken the first right step but it is only temporary to ensure such thing doesnt happen we should have stricter factory laws in terms of hygeine.

Wow, that is crazy! I normally don't use peanut butter, even though my oldest is three. I know she's old enough to eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, but she doesn't really like peanut butter. I have some, but it's not opened. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled and my ears open for more info about this. Thanks for letting us all know about it.

A friend told me her father was effected by this. But I do not know anyone that has been effected. I guess Hiff is going to keep going with their slogan... "Choosy moms chose Jiff" I don't like any other peanut butter. I can say that a few months ago, I DID try Peter Pan...but I didn't like it. Then when I sent my son to the store for peanut butter, he picked up Great Value (WalMart brand) because he wasn't sure if I knew the other peanut butter was more expensive. Yes, I know Jiff costs a bit more...but I just prefer Jiff. NOW...I can tell my partner that he can be grateful for me anal ways with peanut butter. LOL

Iamgine my suprise when I went to the cupboard and found that my Peter Pan pb started with lot # 2111... And it was our 3rd jar of 3... So we have already eaten the other 2 jars (we bought 3 at the same time).. We purchased these at least 2 months ago-- Noone has been sick in our family. My daughter only eats pb once in a while on toast.. Same here with me-- Although in the last couple of weeks I have had cravings for pb & j... My sig. other , he eats it all the time. Not any of us had felt sick though- I'm certainly not eating anymore.. Peter Pan was my pb of choice-- It's the creamiest I think.. I will no longer buy it- I guess I'll become a choosy mom.. Jif.. or even Skippy....

I haven't heard of any local cases up here. I just heard that they were pulling it all off the shelves. It makes me glad that we don't eat Peter Pan peanut butter anymore. That used to be all we bought, but we switched to Skippy a few months back when they were out of Peter Pan at the commisary. I'm glad now, especially since my son just started eating peanut butter. And he's so little that something like that would be very dangerous for him. I really don't understand why there isn't more of a quality control on this. Maybe there will be one, now. I just feel so sad for all those people that have been infected by it!
