Writing for the web

February 17, 2007 8:48am CST
Now I have a lot of experince as a writer in the magazine and print arena and I thought I would venture into the virtual world and offer my services. Boy, it seems like the work people expect you to do for a couple of dollars and not only that they set you these ridiculous deadlines. I have managed to find one project and I completed it, then I got acouple of other offers and honestly, I spent 3 hours writing reviews and worked out I was earning about less than 2.50 an hour. Obviously I'm not doing that anymore. Is it just me, or are writers being taken advantage of on the web?

Yes, I definitely think some of these sites take advantage of writers and would be writers. At first I think the submitters feel that it's something and they want to write but that gets old after awhile. How many hours below minimum wage is anybody willing to work?

Who are you writing for if I may ask? I write content articles for Associated Content. They don't pay much either, $5-$20 an article is what I usually make; but it is a bit extra for me, while I am working on my novel. I too am published in the print medium. I have to agree with you, I do think that writers are taken advantage of online. There are many "want to be" writers out there that will take anything they can get, and online sites know that. It can be difficult to find a good paying gig online, but they are out there. My hubby gets so frusterated because I write and don't make near what he says my time is worth per hour. But I enjoy the writing, so what am I supposed to do, lol. I notice you are new to myLot...welcome. If I can help you in any way, please let me know.

To be honest, I never found out who I was writing for, it was an email address which was passed on, I did get paid, although a pittance, they did pay. Also, they recommended me, so I got a few more. But, I probably will continue with a few, but at the time I made the post I felt 'is this worth the effort', but then I love writing and I suppose it all looks good in my portolio at the end of the day.
