A disturbing myLot "feature?"

United States

Occasionally, I like to just "see what's here" so I use myLot's search feature. Something slightly disturbing just happened. On a search, one of the search results was one of my own PRIVATE MESSAGES to another member. I have to hope (and it makes most sense) that MY private message only would show up in MY search results and not other people's-- otherwise, what would be the point of "private" messaging? Does anyone know for sure about this?

Well, I hope this isn't the case, but I will stick to advice that was given to me years ago concerning this very subject. Anything and everything posted on the internet or through the internet could eventually be read by all. Doesn't mylot has access to all private messaging as it is on their server? I don't know as much about all of it as I should. : )

Indeed-- years of blogging have taught me that I should treat every word I write as "public domain."

That is really disturbing. I also thought that it was strange that private messages would come up with a sitewide search. I would think there would be a separate feature to search messages if that is what you wish to do. I have only used the private message a couple of times, but I too found it odd that you have to tag your messages. Especially since they are listed under your messages. Definately something to watch out for. I was happy to see that a couple people said they only came up for the people involved in the message.

Very odd. Thank goodness it is private. I kinda thought that was what the messaging was for, so if you had something to say that you didnt want to whole world to see, you could. :)

Unnerving-- although I now have it on good authority that I (and the message recipient) am the only person who actually sees that search result. It just seems like an odd way to structure search results.

That is really disturbing. What I am going to have to do, is check it out to make sure. But, the reason I figured that it should be only ours, is because they ask us to tag our messages. I sure hope that all of our stuff does not circulate, even though I have nothing to hide. I guess, it would just bother me, seeing all my stuff everywhere. The internet is like a disaster waiting to happen these days.

It just makes more sense to me that they'd have a separate search for our private messages.

I think that it only shows up on your owns searches, otherwise the search results would be filled with results from private messages, there has to be thousands and thousands of those. I agree with you though, i hope that they really are private, even though I haven't really started using the pm system yet.

You're probably right-- there would be more search results if it were EVERYbody's messages that got searched.
