Putting down a Dog for Being Aggressive?

I realize that innnocent animals (aggressive or not) are being put down everyday simply because the animal world is overpopulated and there just isn't the room for them. Let's say this wasn't the case. Let's say that animals were only being put down for illnesses or for being too aggressive (there weren't animals in humane societies and they all had homes). Do you think it would be justifiable putting down a dog for being aggressive? Isn't it possible that they are aggressive from lack of training or do you think it could come directly from their blood line? Aggressive people don't get put to sleep, they get punished or trained (so to speak) to straighten around their behaviour. Do you think this could work for dogs? Honest opinions are appreciated

There are times when an animal even the most beloved pets have to be euthanized to alleviate pain and suffering. Really aggressive animals are a result of the owners training them to be that way unfortunately they cannot be untrained. My son-in-law has a Pit Bull and they have a bad reputation, his dog was never trained be aggressive and they had him for six years without any problems.

Who has the money to train, medicate, and rehabilitate every aggressive animal? Its not financially feasible. I do think its justifiable to put down an animal for being too aggressive. Its your duty as an animal owner to make sure your animal doesn't hurt anyone. Sometimes the animals for whatever reason are too agressive. The animal shelters will put them down, if they even accept them. They do not adopt out aggressive pets. If you drop it off somewhere you're putting people in danger. If you give it away knowing its aggressive you're still liable and putting other people at risk. It's responsible pet ownership to choose humanely putting a dog to sleep, rather than the other consequences - someone killing it unhumanely.

I'm a bit prejuidice on this one. I believe that aggressive dogs should be put down. My friend had a dog that wasn't even a year old. Our family had been around it since they had gotten it at about 6 or 7 weeks old. The dog went on a biting spree one day. It bit her son in the face requiring six stitches, went after their daughter and she got away, went after a cousin on a swing - she only got a scratch on the neck because she swung out and jumped. The last child to be attacked was my four year old. The mother watched as the dog knocked him down, stood on his back and bit into his head. She stood in the doorway screaming at the dog, but wouldn't go out because she was only in a towel. (She had invited my son to spend the night and was "watching" him.) When the dog went to bite him a second time she got the dogs attention and he let my son up. My son ended up with 12 staples in his head. It turns out that the dog had shown aggressive tendancies a couple of times before. I called the police and the dog was put down. They made excuses for the dog and wouldn't even pay the hospital bill.

I agree with cassidy22. There's no reason animals can't be trained to behave properly if their owners would only take the time and have the patience to do so. That being said, I believe if a dog were to bite my child and the dog was unprovoked, I would want the animal put down.

ALL DOGS CAN BE GOOD PETS WITH PROPER TRAINING! Aggressive dogs are usually a sign of neglectful owners, or lazy owners that don't know how to train their dogs. That being said, shelters and pounds put down aggressive dogs NOT because they can't be trained (with patience and persistence, any dog can be trained) but for LIABILITY. If a shelter adopted out an aggressive dog to an owner who DIDN'T train the animal and THEN it did bite someone, that shelther would be sued. It's not because dogs can't be trained (I often adopt older animals with very bad manners and turn them into very sweet dogs) it's because we live in a lazy and litigious society. People think dogs are easy, but they are not, they require a lot of work. And when something bad happens - people are always looking for someone ELSE to blame. No one wants to take responsibility for their own actions, or their lack of actions. It's very frustrating and a lot of animals that could be good pets end up being put down.

I don't like the thought of putting animals to sleep at all actually. I know we put our dog to sleep when he was getting too sick to care for, but it seems sad to say "your time is up dog!" So if it's an agressive one, maybe take it away from kids and families that can't handle it, but there's probably a place for it somewhere out there.
