Why is it called the 'birds and the bees'?

Birds and the Bees" refer to procreation as an example as the birds and bees carry pollen from one flower to the nexxt and that cause flowers to seed and give "Birth" to a new flower.

I've often wondered that myself. I always figured it's because the birds and the bees are what pollenates our gardens so that they will bear fruit. Bees do most of the pollination to make plants grow, and the birds drop seeds that start new plant life.
