This is really a great question! ...taught me to think for myself. I wasn't allowed to just "follow trends" or just "do what my friends are doing" without first sitting down and looking at just WHY I wanted to do something. It has saved me all manners of trouble and headaches, as an adult. ...taught me to take care of myself. My mom (at least) wanted to make sure she wasn't raising some "helpless man" who couldn't cook, clean, iron, mend a hole in his pants, etc. ...showed me different cultures. We never just vacationed somewhere in package deal hotels; we typically rented a house or apartment, and became part of the local town, living among and interacting with the REAL people of that country.
