If your daughter in college was sharing an apartment with a girl who kept forgetting to pay her part of the rent, what would you do? Can the landlord kick out just one of the kids? Moving back home is not an option because the school is about 8 hours away.

A friend of mine manages an apartment complex and my parents use to own one. Their response is that if both roommates are on the lease, then the roommate not paying her part of the rent can be evicted. But the landlord is not going to rent the entire apartment to one person and only take half the rent. Your daughter would need to make the full rent payments until she gets a new roommate on the lease. Best of luck!

Thanks for the advice and the best wishes. I hope someone who knows how to pay rent is looking for a place. It does seem like by the time they're finished with high school they should know basic money management.

Talk to the landlord and see if he or she's will to give the roomate a 30 day notice.

Thanks. There must be a better choice out there somewhere.

My daughter had a similar problem in college. Usually the rent was taken care of by the parents, but when it wasn't, the rent had to be paid in full whether one of the roommates paid or not. So, it was a hardship at times. The worst thing was the telephone bills. This was before cell phones. The girls had out-of-town boyfriends and they spent hours on the phone with them. They had bills amounting to $300 to $400 each. My daughter did not because her boyfriend was in the same town. The girls refused to pay their portions of the phone bills and the phone service was in my daughter's names. After a few months of struggling and fighting with her roommate,my daughter finally had to contact the girls' parents who accused her of racking up the bills and trying to get out of paying them herself. So, she photo-copied the bills and circled the phone numbers for each girl and mailed them to the parents. The parents finally paid. Unfortunately, friendships were destroyed by the lack of responsibility these girls showed.
