I happen to love reading books about vampires. I've read many different ones over the years. They all seem to take from different legends and then add to them or diverge totally from the legends. I'm always on the look out for new and interesting ones. I love the ones who use historical figures in their storylines as well. They can sometimes really make you think. Two that come to mind with this is "An Old Friend Of The Family" By Fred Saberhagen and "I, Vampire" by Michael Romkey. Both are excellent books and I've enjoyed reading them several times. Saberhagen has written many vampire books actually that I have read. I've also enjoyed the books by Anne Rice, Christopher Pike to name a few off hand. However I'd love to hear from others what ones they have read and enjoyed. Also any you wouldn't recommend. Give me some suggestions for what to read :)

I don't like all vampire books and I am not familiar with Romkey will have to look for that. I do like the characters and the vampire world created by Maggie Shayne however. They originally were intended as light romance so it is hard to find the first ones. But the characters and the story she created is wonderful, fun, and funny, with a different twist as the "Chosen" are heroic, and often innocent vitims. Though when she added in the last two books a new and creative twist, of bring in the Dracula, it was different, at first I thought great ruin a legend, but no she did a great job of creating a new story for an old legend.

Meredith Ann Pierce wrote a series called the Dark Angel trilogy. The "vampyre" in these books is really non-traditional. It's more of a fantasy book, but it's interesting to see how the vampire folklore can be translated in a completely different way. The story is basically this, a young girl is enslaved by a vampyre with black feathered wings. While she is at his castle, she must decide whether to kill him for his terrible deeds, or try to save him for the little humanity she sees that left in him. I know it sounds pretty hokey, but I loved these books when I was younger. In fact, I read them again in my 20s because like you, I have no problem reading young adults books if they are a good read. It's funny, I didn't realize that Christopher Pike wrote any vampire books. I used to love reading his stuff too. I swear, this guy must have written about a million books. It's a good thing because a lot of people just love him/

I know I've seen the Dark Angel series but I don't remember if I read it or not but from the story you put there Id on't think so. Doesn't sound familiar. I'll have to check into it. Christopher Pike has written many different stories. He does have a few vampire ones and they were very good, like most of his work. Another young adult book was called The Silver Kiss, I'm blanking on the author's name though. It was very good.

My favorite is the classic I am Legend by Richard Matheson, which I hear is, god help us all, being made into a movie starring will Smith. Nice guy, *so* night right for this role. Lost Souls by Poppy Z. Brite was a favorite when I was much younger. Chelsey Quinn Yarborough's St. Germaine series, I've enjoyed a few of those. Oh, and Barbara Hambly's Those Who Hunt the Night. I just finished Patrick Califia's Mortal Companion, and unfortunately, I cannot recommend that one. It was bleh. I've got another in my to be read stack called Blood Is Not Enough, it's a short story anthology.

OH goodie more to add to my list :) Those sound interesting. I'll stick clear then of Mortal Companion. Short anthologies can be good. I've read some like that.

The vampyrie - yummmmm - one of my favorite story lines. Anne Rice is wonderful. I go for the 'gothic romance' lines in some of the fan fiction sites as well.

Try "The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova - it is a vampire tracker kind of story. And "Sunshine" by Robin Mckinley, a fantasy writer - it is a "vampire slayer" type story but very enjoyable. I also like the Chris Golden "Menagerie" series which has several magical/demon/faery characters although it can be a bit dark.

Oh you're welcome. Christopher Pike's books believe it or not are in the teenagers book section but they are very good. He also has a bunch of mystery books as well. I've enjoyed many of his. I love the Anne Rice ones. Those were well done. I liked how she did the characters. They were very appealing.

Have you read any of the Dark Series by Christine Feehan? I call it the Carpathian Series because there is a difference between vampires and Carpathians in her story line. But it is a very good series!!! I have finished book 6 and will be reading book 7 as soon as I finish a different book. The reason it is called the Dark series is because Feehan names all the books starting with Dark. And the Carpathians are the darkness until they find their other half that brings them to the light, color, and emotions of the world again. But if the Carpathian does not find his one true Life Mate...then he will loose his soul and become a vampire. http://www.christinefeehan.com/dark_series.htm

I really enjoy the Anita Blake series. I have all of Laurell K Hamilton's books. Now I'm at that point where I have to wait for the next book to come out...lol. When I was younger there was a young adult series out by LJ Smith called the Vampire Diaries. I've enjoyed most of what she wrote. I got rid of her books a while ago but they were really one of my favorite series. I mean I don't think I'd expect a heavy read out of it but they were decent books. She also wrote another series about witches or something...I can't remember for sure it has been so long. But I so wish I would never have gotten rid of them because I can't find them anywhere. I know everyone at school kept borrowing them and then my aunt borrowed. I think other people had them more than I did..lol

The Anne Rice series of Vampire Chronicles has been my favorite. The detail she has put into the characters make them come alive, and believable. I also enjoy vampire movies, I always have to see any new ones that come out. But my favorites are Fright Night and Dracula. I think it is the lure of eternal life that draws us to the vampire legends.

You are probably right about why we are drawn to them. That and many authors put in the struggle they feel about what they are and what they used to be, or good vs. evil, morality. It can be fascinating to see how they develope.

"Carmilla", one of the first vampire books. Granted, it's got really old fashioned language, but it can still send shivers down your spine! I also loved the Vampire series by Linda Lael Miller (light romance): Forever and the Night, For All Eternity, and Time Without End. And there's a Best Book for Young Adults about vampires that I've forgotten the title of...

The Anita Blake series is written by Laurell K Hamilton, who is, without a doubt, one of the best authors I've ever read. I started the series by chance with Blue Moon, and then went back and read the entire series from the beginning. The characters are compelling and so well developed that they eventually become real to you and you can't imagine what it would be like if the character wasn't part of the series. She has a new book, "The Harlequin" coming out in June.

If you haven't seen it already you might like Masteroieces of Terror and the Supernatural, selected by Marvin Kaye. It's a large collection of short stories, and has a goody called 'Carmilla' by Sheridan LeFanu. Here is Wikipedia's review on the short: "Carmilla", a compelling tale of a lesbian vampire, set in darkest central Europe. This story was to greatly influence Bram Stoker in the writing of Dracula. It also served as the basis for several films including Hammer's The Vampire Lovers (1970) and Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer's Vampyr (1932).

I read "Carmilla". It was a strange one although interesting. Not sure if I buy into the Lesbian part but overall it was a dark story about a female vampire.

I have recently come across a new writer named J R Ward, her take on vamps is great and we get introdcued to a new breed of evil. The books are (for all purposes) romance novels but the vamps are awesome! She only has a few books written in the series so far but well worth the read.

ive never read any vampire books, so i cant be much of a help to you. but i LOVE movies and tv shows about vampires. i dont know why, but they just intrigue me so much. i dont necessarily think they're real, but just something about them is really itneresting. i loved "interview with a vampire" and the "buffy the vampire slayer" series. i think ive seen every single one of those episodes. unfortunately, they dont show that series here in the netherlands. maybe i should start reading some vampire books as well.
