Would You Rather Work For What You Have Or Have It Handed To You?

Personally, I would rather work to achieve my own goals then have everything handed to me. I think that by working for the things you want, you learn valuable lessons along the way and it helps to build your character. I feel that if you are handed everything, you miss out on those lessons and therefore will be lacking in character. What do you think? Would you rather work to achieve success and be able to buy things for yourself? Or would you rather have a rich benefactor buy you everything that your heart desires without having to lift a finger to get it?

I don't mind working to achieve my goals, but I have had jobs where I was making decent money and was miserable. And I have had jobs, where I wasn't making alot in the beginning, but I was happy and really enjoyed what I was doing. And because I enjoyed what I was doing, I ended up making more money. So, I think the key is find something that you really enjoy doing, and be happy.

It's a blessing to find a job that you enjoy. :) I agree with you that it is easier to make money when you love what you do. You don't mind putting in more hours and going an extra mile.

I would rather work more for what I have than have it handed to me, and there is really one simple reason why. Although I would love to have money, not having to work for it does not allow you to build character, it does not let you really make the types of mistakes that we all make when we have no money. Mistakes are the best part of life for me, I make lots of them everyday, the trick is to not make the same one twice. What types of mistakes would you make if you could hire others to do everything for you, life is easy if responsibility can be bought. Yes I would rather work for what I have.

I think you have an excellent point of view!! Making mistakes helps us by teaching us what not to do the next time a similar situation comes around.

I think working for what you have makes you appreciate it more. I like being able to buy things for myself. That way, I know that it belongs to me 100%. There's nothing wrong with having things handed to you, too. But it should mean more when it only comes from you.

I agree. I think it would me much more satisfying to be able to buy things for yourself. And you would appreciate it more because you'd understand the hard work that went into getting it.

i would rather work for the things that i have. it feels good to work for your belongings rather than have someone hand them to you. also, i noticed that you value your things more when you buy them yourself.

There are 2 types of successful people 1)the one who made it under their own steam AND 2)the one who has everything handed to them. I belong to group 1. Nothing in my life came easy. I had to support myself and my family. I paid my way through high school and earned a college scholarship. My father couldn't work because he was suffering from cancer. My mom is a housewife. I can proudly say I've earned my stars on my own given field. I have an acquaintance and a friend. Both of them are successful?! One owns a bar and another works as a jr. executive for a bank. However, they became successful not because they earned it but because their families are wealthy. The guy who owns? the bar asked money from his dad to start-up HIS? own businees!? The other one who works as a jr. exec. He works there because his grandpa is the senior exec. of that said bank. If it were me, I wouldn't accept any job offers from any family member or relative. I want them to realize that I can do well without them. What my 2 friends have isn't work. It doesn't even have the right to be called a job. "It's not work, it's charity."

Some days, I wouldn't mind having a rich benefactor. Or for my rich uncle to throw some cash my way (he's given expensive gifts to everyone in my family EXCEPT me). But most of the time, I'd rather work for what I get. For one, if I earn things for myself, I don't owe anybody anything. I can take credit for my own accomplishments. For two, I firmly believe that people who always have everything handed to them never really feel the joy of obtaining a goal or achieving something you worked really hard for. They never develop any depth of character, because they don't really have to think about life or learn how to solve problems. They can just throw money at anything that troubles them, and it goes away. Truly, I feel sorry for them.

I think your character is built by the experiences that you go through and the choices that you make. I agree that not all problems can be solved with money. So if you are constantly having things handed to you, what do you do if you encounter a problem that can't be solved by throwing money at it?

I have had to work for basically every dollar I ever did get so I learned early to value you. kids now days don't have to work for their allowences or anything and they don't appreciate how hard it is to come by money. I don't watse money cause I know how hard it is to make. I think kids should be made to learn the value of a dollar to and if that means chores then so be it. It will make them less likely to spend and waste the money they get then and think about what they are getting instead of letting it float to the wind.

I agree that children these days don't understand the value of money or how it is to budget/save for what you want. I think one of the most important things that a parent can teach their child is the relationship between hard work and the value of money.

I would much rather work for what I have, rather than have it handed to me. I believe that if everything is handed to you, you are not going to be able to provide for yourself if you lose the hand outs. I say keep your nose to the grind stone and work for what you got.

I would much rather have to work for what I get so that I have a strong work ethic. To have things handed to me would make me lazy and shallow. I would be afaid that I would loose the ability to fight and work for what I want! I see that so often in those who have had everything handed to them, they have become lazy and shallow in their thinking and work ethic. Not for me..nope!

I think this is the most honest answer that was given so far. Some people seem to think that they can get everything handed to them and still maintain a good work ethic. For you to admit that having things handed to you would make you lazy and shallow is a very brave and truthful answer.

I'd rather be working for it, because when i work for it i get that sort of feeling of success... I mean you feel like you succeeded in life, when you get everything handed to you, you just feel like you never accomplished anything in your life or you've never done anything with your life.

i'd work and from time to time ask somebody to hand me some luxuries in life. It's not easy earning money these days and before the next pay day, I'm already broke. NOw how could I give in to my heart desires when my earnings wouldn't suffice my daily expenses? I'm working hard and used to work three jobs. I'm still dirt poor.

I understand where you're coming from. It seems that in this day and age people still have to work two or three jobs to even make ends meet. With the cost of living on the rise, it's extremely difficult to be able to take care of daily expenses while still managing to save a little extra for yourself.

i would also prefer to work for myself. i dont take things which come for free, esp big ones. if i take it i will eventually have to pay later on, thats what i think....so why not be on the safer side and work instead...

That's true...I would never be able to accept something very valuable without feeling that I owed the giver.

If you're working and getting everything handed to you, don't you think that eventually you'll get tired of working and will stop trying to achieve things for yourself?

Well, i don't think I can honestly even make the comparison. I've had to work very hard for everything and I don't know what if feels like to be handed anything. I wouldn't mind being handed something on a silver platter though. Of course it would be just for the purpose of comparison. LOL

well since i have worked for everything i've gotten, i guess it would be so nice to have some handed to me. But having worked for so long, you learn to appreciate the things you have, and take care of them with much more pride i suppose.

I would much rather work for what I have than have someone just hand it to me. I want to earn the money I make. I want to use the talents and skills the Good Lord gave me. He didn't give them to me to just sit on my behind and do nothing.

I value the money I earn far more than any money I don't work for. I work very hard in my job and I feel I earn every penny of my salary, and I spend it very carefully on things I really need or really want. Whereas when I used to be a student I spent my student loan far more freely. I didn't have to work to earn it - I just "got" it. So I would rather earn my money, definitely. But I wouldn't want to work so hard that I could not enjoy the rest of my life, either.

If I had the choice, I'd have everything handed to me. :-)
