Not really. There is also a good protein mix in the form of dhal. However, it cannot be compared with the protein got from non-veg items, may be. Even idli has urad dhal in it. Kichdi or pongal has moong dhal in this. Adai is a mix of dhals. Dosa has urad and fenugreek in it. Uppuma can be made with wheat rava too. Similarly, in sweet dishes too we can opt for any number of sweet dishes with a judicious mix of fibre and protein in it.Even in some side dishes, we can opt for a judicious mix of dhal in this like paruppusili, masalvadai, aamai vadai etc. The main course may have rice rich in carbohydrates, but the addition of other items is our choice. Another important factor is, south India is known for its traditional''sozhanadu sorudaithu''. This is why, people would have made this their staple diet, depending largely on the affordability of items and given the climatic conditions in south india this carbohydrate rich diet would have found favour. There is of course maize and ragi used to a great extent in our rural villages even now.Lack of awareness make people just eat rice with some chilly added to it because it is filling . But educated classes are certainly more conscious of the balanced diet and that is why idli ,dosa are consumed with chutney and sambar as their compulsory side dishes. what goes into the making of sambar.?-Dhal in a big way. Is it not?

Idli is actually the simplest to cook and lightest to eat. Makes THE best breakfast for any person irrespective of your tastes and ideals.

well i dont know about the content of carbohydrate, but i really enjoy south indian food. I like dosas more than idlies. I like idly but dosas are better than it. I can eat many dosas but only limited number of idly :)

No Idli is also included in diet of people of north Orissa. Idli steamed on termeric leaves and stuffed with coconut is an essential item on the occassion of the "Prathamashtami" festival.
