The Wife Was Walking Home

Saturday evening we had a huge snowstorm/blizzard hit here in Minnesota. My wife doesn't drive and she had to work till 11 p.m. I pick her up every night. It's just 15 miles from home so it's an easy trip. Except Saturday night was a rough time to drive anywhere actually. Now she called to say she was getting off an hour early. She was going to take the city bus to the mall thats a mile and a half from our home. I was under the impression she'd call me from the bar or restaraunt next to the mall to pick her up. She said when she got off the bus she looked around the parking lot for me expecting me to be there already. Well when she went to the bar next to the mall and they said their phone doesn't get outdside lines. I find that very hard to belive. So she sat in the shelter waiting a few minutes thinking I was going to show up anyhow. She decided to walk the mile and a half in the snow. She was dressed for the weather as she took the bus to work earlier that evening. While I went out to warm the car the phone rang. The call went like this, "Mr Olson this is Officer Kim I. of the police department." I panicked asking, "Ohhh no what happened?" He said he found her walking and is bringing her home. She told him she thought I may have gotten stuck somewhere on the roads heading to get her. The roads were that bad. He said, "Thankfully you're all right." In a minute he dropped her off in front of the house. She told me she must have thanked him a hundred times. The funny thing is that there was aniother woman at the bus stop in the mall lot that she asked the officer to go back and get her as she couldn't call home either for a ride. This whole episode was so hilarious the wife and I sat up talking about it and laughing so hard till she went to bed. Now I know if she ever takes the bus to the mall agian she is expecting me to be there when she arrives. So that's taken care of now. Now this episode has made me also think seriously about getting a cell phone. I truely hate them but.... I do have Onstar in my vehicle with a phone but that doesnt do any good if I'm not in the car. Have any of you ever had a similar episode along these lines? I'd love to hear about it.

You were so lucky. God had to be with your wife. Trying to walk in a blizzard late at night could have had a differen ending. I too hate cell phones but have one for just such situations as the one that you described. I don't live where it snows but am not able to walk far if I have any car trouble and am incapable of changing a tire if need be. If I were you, I would get one for both you and your wife for this reason. Cell phones are good to have for emergancys.

Awwww... how sweet and a wonderful story. Not only does it show the love between you two, it shows how wonderful the police can be for us. That means something in todays world. As for the phone. Seriously, get a pay as you go phone. For about 100 dollars a year you can get a tracfone card that keeps the same number and gives you a couple hundred minutes... I think it might be like 120 actually. This will make it so your wife can always get in touch with you from wherever and you dont have to worry about monthly bills, etc. And you can use it quite often actually for the 120 minutes if your intentions are to use it only when you must. I have one for my kids to get ahold of me if I go out or if they go someplace that I want to be sure they can get ahold of me at home. It's wonderful and worth a mere $100 a year! A fraction of the cost of an actual cell phone! AND... just FYI, the cell phone, even if it has NO minutes on it can be used for 911 calls all the time!

What a great story! You must have been married long enough for her not to get upset at you! And for you both to laugh at the episode...wow...after working all day, I'd probably be a little irritated. We have had cell phones for only a couple of years, and we used them in the beginning for just this type of thing, or to say, okay I'm leaving now, if I'm not home in a few minutes, come check on me...You could try out the pay-as-you-go phones, like tracfone to try them out.

My Wife Online LOL - Deb doesn't get online a lot.
Thanks for the response & kind words. I have OnStar on my car. That has a sattelite phone built into it through the radio. I can get Verizon & the minutes from the Verixon cell also would work in the car. We're looking into that option now also. Thanks again. No we're not Packer fans. HAHAHAHA!!!!! Just got the sweatshirt from a rival fan/friend of mine in a bet. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!

Hi, Grandpa Bob, I can just imagine how you felt when you got that call. Wow, I would have freaked out. Thank goodness everything worked out. I live in NYC after I saw those two buildings come down, lost a good buddy of mine in there and then my younger brother who is a volunteer firefighter ran over there and worked many days and nights, I had to get a cell and my mom even has one and now I don't go anywhere without it. I won't even run down to the lobby of my building to get my mail without it (I could get stuck in the elevator again). Even for people who can't get a wireless cell contract maybe because of bad credit or no credit at all, they have really cool inexpensive pre-paid cell phones with VIRGIN MOBILE. Radio Shack, Target, BestBuy all sell them. No credit check, no cell bills, you pre pay it and that's it. The company who owns Virgin Mobile is Sprint so your getting really good cell coverage all over the US. I think everyone should have a cell phone now a days.

Well, it restores faith in the police, what a nice thing to do, picking her up lie that! I have a mobile phone that goes most places with me, I put £15 on it in August and still have £6.50 left, if you have pay as you go phones you hardly have to use them at all but they can be really useful. My Newty-dog is getting really old (13) and when we gor for our walk I take my phone in case she gets hurt and I need help to get her off the beach.

Glad to hear your wife got home safely, Grandpa Bob. Walking in a blizzard like that is dangerous. When I started my job 5 yrs ago, my hubby and I had a pre-paid cell phone that he would have with him on his way to work and then I would have when I was working. Got to the point that we both needed the phone at the same time so we went with a contract. Only carrier that works close to 100% out here is Verizon. The phone hss paid for itself many times over when my car would break down in the middlle of nowhere on a road that seldom gets traveled. I'm a motor route carrier for the county paper and my route takes me down a lot of back roads where the houses are far from each other. One time I forgot to charge my battery so left the phone at home. Wouldn't you know it the tie rod snapped while I was going 40mph down a gravel road. I had to walk 2 miles in 90 degree heat/100% humidity to the nearest house to use their phone to call a towtruck. Talk about aggravating. Never without it now.

I'm glad everything turned out ok at the end of this story! It doesnt bother me that cops have cell phones what bothers me is that they don't pull over while using it! If they are going 20 MPH I think they should have to pull over just like the rest of us! So obviously this wasn't an emergency in the case I was talking about and in your wife's case the car was probably stopped when they called you since your wife was there within a minute! Yes?
