Smokers....please explain this habit to me

Why is okay to flick a lit cigarrette onto the ground and then just walk away? I mean, I wanna yell....hey YOU, who is gonna pick that up?? Of course I never say anything. But I would really like to know why it is done and why do some people feel it is acceptable to do this..........also wanna add that this is not a bash against smokers and I do realize that not all smokers do this. But for those that do, I would really like to understand why.

You are totally right.
I get people like to have a smoke, whatever, it's cool.
But when there's ashtrays all over the place, I don't get why smokers can't just put the butts into one of those.

I've often wondered that myself. It seems to be automatic, even among people who would never drop a tin can on the street. I always wonder what the hell they are thinking.
