branded medications are much higher in price than the generic ones because of the fact that it holds a "name" and they are owned by companies with a bigger name also in the field of medicines but in reality, generic meds and branded meds are just the same in content. whenever i have to buy meds, i make sure to know the generic name of it 'coz if don't have sufficient money, i always ask the pharmacist to give me the generic counterpart of it, and yes it is way much cheaper...

hehe well lets just say as to serve you with quality, they will always refer to you the best right?? according to some studies and actually there have been incidents that generic meds or at least those that are not branded have caused unwanted side effects to some of its consumers... i think unless you want to take the risk, you ask for it, but for the pharmacist to recommend it, hmm i dont think they should do that, probably inform? but not suggest :) thanks

Our pharmacist usually asks if we want generic and we always take it. Our insurance does cover name brand but it costs us more. I think it is $30 for name brand (not on their list), $15 for name brand (on their preferred list) and $7 for generic. Well that was what it was last year. Not sure if they changed it this year. We get almost everything generic/store brand--our food, baby formula, diapers, medicine.

Why pay more for branded medicine while I can subscribe to generic medicine. As long as it can cure then I don't mind subscribing to it. It works for me though, it's good so far on me.

With my insurance, if there is a generic version of the brand name, they will not pay for the brand name, you must have generic. They do make exceptions with birth control. My doctor had to write to the insurance company to get the OK not to give me general birth control. I take it for migraines, and the generic just did not work. My pharamcy usually asks me though, if we have generic, do you want it? Only on rare occasions are the generics as expensive as the original.

I take medication and I only use the brand name because the generic brand doe not have the same effect on my condition. I never ask for the generic, but if I go to a pharmacy, they will give me the generic unless I specifically request the brand name. I recently discussed the effects of the generic .vs. the brand name with my doctor and she agreed that the generic is not as effective in moderating my condition. I am a thyroid patient and the generic makes me feel like I am not even on medication. I feel extremely sluggish adn tired. When I am on the name brand I feel 100% better. So I guess its best to discuss the benefits of generic .vs. brand name of the type of medicine you are taking with your doctor or pharmacist. While insurance companies can stipulate generic .vs. brand name- a good argument from the doctor may also help mitigate cost.

Look for the their generic name first. Branded products are often mistaken. People brought this up because of other users comment. But we ourself would find up what's the uses of that pills by looking up to its generic name.

i've known generic brands have the same effects af that of the branded ones. i've worked with a branded pharmaceuticals company a long time ago and thats where i've found out about it. it really does save you money. only watch for fly-by-night medicines. if you want cheaper medications you can always try those herbal medicines.

my health insurance will only pay for generic brand pills. i've personally not noted a difference between them and the name brand samples i've gotten from the doctor.

I usually buy generic pills and I guess the chemist doesn't mention it as he would spend all day long telling people to buy them instead of the ones they have asked for and imagine how much time this would eat up in a day. also not eveyone wants to buy these and prefer the brand names. but once you have found out abaout this then it does make a big saving, the sam with vitamins if you ask yu can often get these cheaper at chemists and they are just as good as the more expensive named brands.

I personally take whatever is cheaper. However, I also hate it when they prescribe a generic without me knowing first. I'm lucky to have insurance, so brand name is only twice as much as generic each month, so not really an issue there. If you can find generic I recommend it. I've never found the potency to be any less.

I always ask the doctor for a rx that is generic, and the pharmist too. You can also tell your doctor you cannot afford meds, and they will give you samples to help.

Well with my insurance if there is a genertic brand of the pill then the parmacy will give it to me unless i ask for the brand name. If I chose the brand name over the genertic it $5 more than the genertic brand

I was aware of the generic offering, and you're right, the doctor doesn't suggest the generic, heck they rarely mention it. I guess it someting to do with all those free little samples they get. lol I always ask for the generic version of any perscription I get. Sometimes, however, there is no generic version. Those types of medications are so expensive that a second mortgage may need to be arranged. :-)

We get Generic pills as often as possible. Most times we are given the choice, but there are a few occasions where we had to ask. I don't see the point in paying out double the amount of money for a pill that does exactly the same job as something at half the price.

Yes we should all buy generics. They have the same formula of the brand ones, and are cheaper. But sometimes we just forget of that. It happens a lot to my mom. But it shoud be a duty to pharmacist and doctor to alert and ask us if we want generics or not.
