Have you ever noticed that there is no truly altruistic act?

There is normally a selfish motive behind any action that people take. A "what's in it for me?"kind of approach to living. Even the most benign favors and gifts are given either with an eye to the past (to settle a debt of gratitude) or toward some possible future point where they will be compensated in some way shape or form. Even those who say, oh I will gain my reward in the afterlife. They may or may not really realize that they will be "keeping score" on the tally sheet in their minds. And then they also want to be compensated with the ultimate gift of eternal life for their selflessness.

Well i couldn't agree more with you sharone, it is absolutely true that their is a selfish motive behind every action taken by people. Giving of gifts is a far ahead step to find an answer to your question.... the real thing begins with you... when you like, love yourself, there and then you start liking n loving people and things that are attached to you in any manner. For instance take your parents, you probably love and cherish them for what they are! ...they are your "YOUR" parents, thats the key word. Had they been anybody else's parents what would you have to do with them? Probably nothing! Now there is another issue regarding how far one can go in one's own pursuance to perform any deed for somebody, is dependent upon how much one cares for the other or even the cause. Be it a person one is attached to or a cause one is devoted to, the sole basic reason behind every act is one's own benefit here or afterlife. Yes even though you dont keep track of all these acts, but you perform them for yourself, your appraisal, your afterlife.... and so on.
