Work Absences

Okay now I haven't had a full time job in quite a few years as I am the care giver for my father now. But I recall when I was a machinist, that Mondays always seemed to be the days' where the most call-ins for sick days occured, followed by Fridays. Now I never paid much attention when I worked as to how many people actually missed Mondays. That is until I realized a very important fact about myself. You see I had quit drinking & using drugs in 1991 while I worked as a machinist at this small family owned factory. I realized that before I had quit abusing these substances I too had called in sick a LOT of Mondays & Fridays. Mostly due to the ever dreaded hangover or just not feeling like getting up after a party filled weekend. Also for the Fridays to start a long weekend of partying. Any other stories along these lines? Any employeers have any stories of their employees? HAHAHA. That can be touchy to say the least. I'd love to hear about the times we called in sick for stupid reasons other than actually being sick. Thanks in advance and as always..... Happy postings from Grandpa Bob

Yes, I remember getting absences from work mostly on Fridays and Mondays. This is to lengthen the days I can spend with my children or, if I pay my old folks a visit, to stretch the visit for one more day.

Now that sounds good. I had told my bosses I was taking a day or two off to visit my parents when they lived at the farm. But never called in sick for that reason. I needed the sick days for my partying I felt. So you never called in for a stupid reason I take it then?

Hehehehe - I used to call it "Calling in 'slick'" I tried to "schedule" my slick days in the middle of the week, just to break it up and not look too suspicious. I would call anytime I felt overworked (my main profession was front desk at a dental office) or if someone had pissed me off and I felt I deserved some justified, self-imposed "comp-time". Now, keep in mind that usually every time I did this, I ended up REALLY getting sick within the next week. Oh, well!

"best of luck dear" I don't even know you to be called dear by you. And if you'd search around my page I am sure you'd find some "interesting" discussions. Other wise you need not be here. Thank you for the kind words either way as a response if that's what this is called. Sounds like someone has a slight attitude? Happy postings from Grandpa bob

Oh my - I am guilty as charged here! I hate working - aways have - would give it up tomorrow if I could afford to! I'm not so bad on the pulling a sickie thing now, because now that I@m older, I don't have so many late nights and wild parties as I did 20 years ago, - but if you want to know how many times I've been "unwell" on a Friday, or a Monday in the past, then I would say too many to mention!! There was the time a girlfriend and I went to Dublin for a weekend to see her ex-boyfriend play in his bad at a festival there - that entailed a Friday because the gig was Friday night and I knew I wouldn't get the leave because too many people wee already off, so I developed the most dreadful migraine:-)) And then there was the time I had to phone in sock on the Monday because a player I knew had reached the final (held on Sunday), and I didn't want to miss it, or the party afterwards! And did I mention the Monday I phoned in sick to take a friend back to the Airport because they wouldn't give me the time off, snd I didn't want to leave her to go there on her own with all her luggage? I think you get the picture! Bet you're shcked at me now, - but life is for living I say - not working!!!

Although I wasn't one of the ones who did the calling in, I did notice that there were a lot of others calling in sick on these days. It really didn't bother me much though. I always tried to keep these days clear so they could call me into work for in a pinch. I could always use a bit of overtime pay.

It's hard to tell, but it seems strange that they would almost always be on Mondays and Fridays if they were for legitimate reasons. lol

Yeah I recalled those days where I called my former employer to tell I was sick. I usually telling this excuse on Monday instead of Friday. You know what, I hate Monday but I love Friday as the last day of work and I wear casual clothes on Friday! I always consider Friday after finished working as the start of weekend and enjoying hanging out with friends. Well that's the past and my current employer is unfortunately more strict, if I sick during the day I need to give doctor's certificate to say I was genuinely sick on that day. Otherwise the employer won't believe me, although I was resting at home. I missed those past joyful days :)

I don't have a job yet as I am still studying but as a student I have also encountered these same occurences. Usually during fridays, especially on my last class which is World Literature this semester, most people would be absent from class. It's funny to note that people would really want longer weekends. Of course if you gave them fridays and mondays off then people would call in sick on thursdays and tuesdays. What's more interesting are the reasons we give to our teachers whenever we would miss an exam (fridays are usually exam days).

The day that the most people are absences at my job are the sundays. Why? WE have a lot of young adult at my job (I work in a store kinda home depot) and they all go out saturdays so they don't come sunday. The problem is less then before because a lot of them left the job and the new one are more there.

I too take more Fridays off than any day! Long weekends! they are the best.. I've used a share of my own sick days for non-sick related call-offs. I wanted to catch a great sale : )... spend time with my daughter, leave for an early vacation, start the weekend before the weekend.. You get the idea! Nothing is better than a short work week!

I feel like a goody 2 shoes now lol. I've never called in sick when i wasn't. Ive only ever been off twise for i was VERY unwell (more than jsut a wimpy cold lol) I dont like the idea of leaveing my work colleges in the lurch because i dont want to come in. I guess since my work isn't 9-5 mon to sat and i work all 7 days.. just different ones each week, i dont feel the need to do that. Nobody at work really calls in sick at the weekends either. They tend to come in with a hangover and just ask for till work ^_^

I never called in sick for a reason other than actually being sick. There were a lot of other people though who called in sick, especially when I worked at the store. Most of us were youngish types, early twenties and so we liked to go out together and have a few drinks and so on at the weekend. There was one girl who came out with us every Saturday night. She also was out on Friday nights and Sunday nights too, and she ALWAYS called in sick on Mondays if she thought she could get away with it. It took about 2 months before the bosses caught on to the fact that she was out drinking every weekend, and she got fired. We never saw her again after that, because she believed that one of us had told our bosses about her.

Hi Grandpa Bob, haha, i used to do that a lot too- and on my 1st job ever- and that was the reason i got fired.. =) i dont know, its just that i feel so lazy waking up every monday mornings- im usually absent during mondays though- i love going to work on a friday because its the lAST day of work. Most of the time, mondays are the busiest days where you get compiled left over work from the weekends that's why as much as possible,i try to avoid going to work during mondays and leave all the dirty work to my colleagues lol....yes im bad... i know... I got fired because of it so were even =)

I haven't really ever paid attention to this. I work for myself so I can't really call in sick. I can call the parents though so I guess that would kinda be like calling in. I take care of children in my home and I only call them when I'm really, really sick to tell them that I can't watch them.

For women working full time, i think mondays are the days they always wanna take a leave from work. Its because its during the week end that they do a lot of work, much more than office work. You see, work at home is never finished. The week end is never enough to do the household chores, laundry, cleaning and a whole lot more. We always wish there is a three day week end. When monday comes we are so exhausted, so we take a leave to take a rest, oh but then do we rest?

AH yes mondays. How I hate them. The good thing is I have mondays off now. But when I did have a 9-5 job at a factory it seems mondays would be my "catch up on my rest' from the weekend. Yes I did a little too much partying myself in my younger days. Also I recall I would sometimes call in sick on fridays because!~ thursdays were payday at that job. So you know what that meant money to go out and party with! LOL!

yeah, monday is the worst day ever. I'm tempted many times to call in sick on mondays. Today I couldnt go to work because i was sick, for real this time. when i called my boss, he questioned, "so you're going to the doctor right?" I didnt plan to go but I did, just so it wouldnt look too bad.
