when i was young & my grandmother introduce crocheting to me...well when i moved in with her when my parents divorced...we started crocheting a blanket from her left over scraps...pretty soon we realized we finished the yarns...so it got to the point that we would just buy & continue to add the whole yarn to the blanket...well when she passed away...one of my aunties took that blanket without me knowing...i was sad because we worked hard on it & we had shared alot of happy moments creating that blanket...now i have collected my scraps of yarn & continue making scrappy blankets to leave to my girls & hopefully that they will be the 4th generation of crocheters in my family...continue my grandmother's legacy...

I like using yarn scraps for making little things. For example I really like making flowers or butterflys and using them for embellisments on bigger projects. If you have wool or other animal fiber yarn you can use it to do wet or needle felting....which is pretty fun and yeilds some great results. Sometimes I just share my yarn scraps with other people who I know are looking for a variety of yarn for granny square projects.

I think needle felting is a little more fun...and a great way to get any pent up agressions out. LoL!

yes...don't throw any yarn away...put it in a container until you accumalate enough to start a scrappy blanket...it is amazing when it keeps getting bigger & the colors all come together...you will be proud of yourself...

When you visit your auntie, why not ask to see the blanket and tell her some memories that you have from your grandmother. She might start thinking and give you the blanket.. Worth a try.. At least you have the memories that are your own - nobody can take them.. and the skills to make more blankets and other crocheting crafts. And you can teach the skills to others..

When I was younger I used to use spare and scraps of wool and yarn to knit squares to make blankets for childrens charities.

How sad that you lost the blanket that you and your grandmother worked so hard on. I'm glad that you have stayed with the hobby. I hope your children appreciate all the work and love that goes into those projects. I'm not a very patient crocheter. I make little projects, like dolly blankets (Barbie size) and dresses out of scrap yarn. My mother is the talented one. She loves making baby afghans. Made one for each of her grandchildren, and several for friends and family. I'm hoping that my children can pick up a hobby from me, (quilting) my mom (crocheting) or my sister (who knits.) We all had the same teacher, but have different interests. Funny how that works. :)

Ive crocheted scrunchies and made trim with leftover scraps. Also have used the yarn to make little recipe books or something like that, or donated them for school projects. I also make baby hats for charity and they don't take much yarn either.

My DH uses my leftover scraps of yarn to make granny squares or yoyos for a blanket. Most of the family does a yarn craft so we all take a part in the blanket. He has a bag full of grannies and one of yoyos. We are hoping to start putting one together soon.

The pieces that are too short to do anything with I save in a bag for a friend who couches fibers to fabric that she then uses in her quilts.
