Social networking sites. What do you think about them?

These days, social networking sites like Orkut, Hi5, Myspace are gaining immense popularity day by day. On one hand they are helping people expand their social network and make new friends, but on the other hand, there are some miscreants making hate communities and fake profiles. So there are pros and cons of these so called social networking sites.
What do you think about these sites? Do you think we need them? Isnt the good old messenger enough for communicating with friends?

I enjoy a little social networking, but not on sites like Myspace. I prefer small sites where people actually get to know each other. Writing sites work the best for me.

I think these Social networking sites have become popular because of the thing that they are giving to their users. I havent used Hi5 and Myspace but am consitantly using orkut. The best part of these sites is that they have helped us find our friends who got apart from us due to some reasons and we dont even think of meeting them again. But with orkut, I have foung 12 such friends of mine and some have traced me as well! So, this is the best part, they help us meet our loved ones, and add sparkle to our social life!
