Quilting fabric vs fashion fabric

Just out of curiosity, is there any reason that quilting fabric couldn't be used for fashion fabric? I am making a skirt, and I found this really cute print, but it says it's a quilting fabric... Since I'm still really new to this sewing thing, can anyone help me with some tips on choosing a fabric?

by all means, use the "quilting fabric" for apparrel. It is after all 100% cotton. :) The only big thing to remember is it *may* shrink after it's sewn (not likely--especially if you prewash) and it will wrinkle, wrinkle, wrinkle!!! I've made many garments for my daughters using quilting cotton. They haven't complained once. :) Happy sewing!!!

Wow, I've never noticed material being called quilting fabric! I like to make quilts but I just use regular material... and when I make an outfit, I just go to the store and pick out material! I don't ever look to see if it's marked for anything special. Now you have me curious! lol! Next time I go to a store that has material, I'll be looking to see what it says! Have fun making your outfit!

LOL -- I guess I'm just nervous because while I've done drapes, pillows, etc., this will be only the second wearable item I've ever made!

Quilting cotton is often called calico, and if pirate lore has taught me anything, it was very commonplace to wear clothes out of calico. If you live somewhere that doesn't tax clothes, you might be able to tell the person cutting your fabric that the fabric is going to be used for clothing. They will be able to change whether or not you are taxed for that fabric--quilting fabric is generally taxed.

By all means use the fabric for clothes. But head the warning above. It most likely is 100% cotton. So make sure thar you pre-wash the fabric. I use quilting fabrics all the time for alot of different things. The prints are so much cuter. Good luck with your project. Please keep sewing!!!

Quiliting fabric and cotton fabric are one in the same. When quiliting go so popular, simple cotton fabric was tagged as Quiliting Fabric. Here in California there are stores dedicated to selling just "Quiliting Fabric" and supplies. I have used alot of quilitng fabric for clothes. I always prewash the fabric for two reasons. First it allows the fabric to shrink if it has an inclination to do so, and secondly it washes all the factory and shipping dust out of the fabric before you sew it. I learned along time ago tht the dust in the fabric does tend to dull your sewing machine needles. It also requires you to clean your machine more often than if you prewash the fabric. The one difference I have noticed with quilt fabric is some of it is a heavier more durable cotton then it was before. Hope I've helped. Enjoy your sewing.

Great tip about the prewash. I knew that it helps keep things from shrinking, but didn't know about the dust factor. Thanks!

well to be honest i have been quilting and sewing for a long time now and i have never noticed fabric being called quilting fabric or fashion fabric like that so no i do would not think that there should be any reason as to why you could not use quilting fabric for a skirt or using fashion fabric for a quilt it may just be the texture and the way the threads run in the material but i do not think any normal person on the street is going to stop you and inform you that you are wearing quilting fabric as a skirt haha
