I'm browsing fabric stores online, and I keep coming across the term "fat quarters". Can anyone tell me what these are?

Thanks for posting this question. I have been looking up fabric on ebay and there were several selling fat quarters and didn't know what it was. I didn't ask anyone because I didn't want to sound stupid. But as one of my friends is always telling me there is no stupid questions because if you are wondering then there is a good chance someone else is asking themselves the same thing. Thanks again.

No problem gewcew... I'm never worried about looking stupid. I'd rather seem foolish for asking than do something foolish (like ordering fabric that's cut too small for the project I'm working on) because I didn't ask!

I wasn't sure what size it was, so I looked it up. It says you take one 1/2 yd off the bolt, which is 18" by 44". You cut that in half and you have a cut 18" x 22". That is a FAT. So if they are selling a Fat quarter, you are getting a piece of material that is 18" x 22". Hope that helps!

Fat quarters are 18" by 22" pieces of fabric. They were developed for quilters. They also come in very handy if you need a small amount of fabric, and don't want to buy off of a bolt. Of course if you all are anything like me, you have a store in your closet, or basement. Oh well. That is what makes us fabriholics. Right, I don't think that is a word, but oh well. I am what I am and noone can change that.

Actually fat quarters aren't just for quilting. I make teddy bears and they are now offering "fat quarters" for bear making fabric. So, a fat quarter is a half yard of fabric that is cut in half again so that you have a larger section of fabric to work with.
