What Nutritional Supplements Are You On?

My husband and I have our vitamins down to what we think is a science. Without fail, we take our vitamins every night before we go to bed. Why at night? Our doctor told us if we took them at night, they would work while we sleep, giving us more energy when we woke us, as opposed to taking them in the morning, they would take hours to activate. This is our daily regimen. 1 multivitamin (Centrum) 500 mg of vitamin C - 6 times a day 81 mg aspirin 400 mg vitamin E 200 mg vitamin B6 200 mg vitamin B12 1000 mg Fish Oil with Omega 3 400 mg St John's Wart We both look and feel terrific for our age. What's your regimen and do you believe it works for you?

My vitamin supplements are varied. I have tried taking 1000 mg. of Vitamin C and 400 i.u. of Vitamin E for years. I believe that this supplements do wonders to our body but there were so many kinds out there that promises the same benefit that you get from your regular vitamins. I gave other supplements a chance at one point or another in my life like Lecithin, Zinc, Grapeseed Extract, Evening Primrose Oil, Royal Jelly, Spirulina etc. When I feel that the present supplement that I am taking no longer has an effect in my system I change it. But then I also go back to the previous stuff that I was taking. Lately I am taking only Vitamin B Complex plus Vitamin C. Usually I only take vitamin E at night because I was told that this vitamin works better at night. No one told me to do so with B complex but I think it's great taken at night too. I believe vitamin works for me because at 46 I feel great.

No problem Stargazer. Good discussions are hard to find. I appreciate it tremendously.!

Thank you 25th_Stargazer. I've also been told it has a great deal to do with the kind of 'binder' that holds the pill together. Some people have a hard time with those.

I have some questions because I see maybe my regimen beginning when I arise, as opposed to calming my body and entering sleep (REM hopefully) to take my vitamins and supplements, is not working well enough for me. Why do the supplements taken as soon as one rises take hours to activate ? I am thinking a breakdown of the celluloid caplet surrounding the minerals is better manipulated during the sleep cycle. Is this an incorrect assumption? Next doesn't the 30,000mg's of Vitamin C you would be absorbing (500mg'sX6 in a 24 hour period) get mostly urinated out or worse creating majorly loose stools, keeping you in the bathroom much longer than you anticipate? I realize ascorbic acid is highly essential in fighting free radicals and offering outstanding anti-oxidant protection, but that much ? I have an ovarian cyst so some of my supplements are not on your list; however, I take 2400mg's of Omega 3 Fish Oil that is 2 1200mg pills in am usually before 11am, also an oz of wild yam concoction I made to provide progesterone easier and balance out the over-production of estrogen. I like the results, but I want to feel even better so I want to try your suggestion and let you know how it works. Sharing the light, Erica aka 'enlightenedpsych2'

It takes time for the vitamins to disolve for one thing, and also takes time for them to enter your bloodstream. I didn't say 30,000 (I hope). If I did, I meant to say 3,000. You are right. 500 mg in intervals of every 2 or 3 hours (since we sleep around 8 hours each night) = 3,000 mg a day. What our body doesn't absorb we urinate out. Taking anything over 500 mg at a time your body will discard. I'm sorry if you thought I said 30,000.

I am not well versed to suggest you a best decision, but i think eating vegetables and fruits of different kinds would help us to keep us healthy and some things like oily stuffs should be avoided..

The only thing I do is take a multi-vitamin and add C when I am feeling a cold coming on... I'd like to add acidopholus, vitamin E and a B complex to the mix....but haven't as of yet.

Hi songbirdnaimh, The acidopholus really helps and the E is a great antitoxin. The B complex takes a while to work but it sure boosts your energy level. The nighttime dosage became a great part of my before I go to bed routine, which made it easier to do.

YIKES! that seems like a lot. You must have the most expensive Pee in the US. I think our body soaks up what we need from a well balanced diet and all the rest just gets peed out. Sounds like way too much vitamin C. I heard that your body only soaks up 500mg a day and the rest is just peed out.

Recommended dosage (from a physician and nutritionist) is 3,000 units a day taken. If you take 500mg at a time, several times a day, your body can utilize the C to it's best advantage. More than 500mg at a time and yes, you are right, the body just flushes it out. That's why you have to spread the total amount over a 24 hour period. At least that's what my doctor says. Since I've been doing it that way, my skin is clearer, I don't have headaches like I use to and neither of us, my husband or I, don't have colds or as many allergies as we use to. I did research on that amount of C and found he was right.

what your doctor told you is contrary to what my doctor said. according to my doctor, we'd be better able to maximize the effects of vitamins if we take them in the morning. i take vitamin c usually in the morning, although i'm not really very strict about it. if i forget, i take it at night, and honestly, i don't see any difference at all. iron supplements i take in the evening because they make me sleepy.

Hi toonatoons, I think every doctor will tell you something different. It's what works best for you. The vitamin C needs to be a large dose taken over several hours a day to be beneficial. Otherwise, the body just sluffs it off.

I take Rainbow Light brand vitamins, specifically the Complete Nutritional System. It's so energizing, though, it is definitely not a vitamin to be taken in the evening--it would keep me awake! I've taken these for 20+ years now, just awesome. Sometimes meds are advised to be taken at bedtime because some people get stomach upset with them. Vitamins that contain iron are notorious for that; most people do not need additional iron.

Thank You maclinda. I've heard of Rainbow brand. It's great to get into such a good routine and do something for ourselves. I've heard about iron upsetting people's stomachs. Thanks for reminding me.
