Do You Believe In Ghosts?

March 19, 2007 12:58am CST
My assertion is that ghosts are a figment of the human imagination, akin to religious concepts. I wrote an article with my thoughts on the subject: http://www.helium.com/tm/157167 What are your thoughts? Draven the Respectful Atheist http://dravenwriter.blogspot.com

I believe in spirits yes. Darvenwriter my opinion is that none of us will believe anything if we have not experienced something. If i say there is no such thing as electricity because we cannot see it or there is no air because we cannot see it thats not true because both air and electricity exist. So it is with the spirits. I am not very scientific but there are instance where the photographs of spirits have been taken. We know the earth as we see it but there are different planes of existance here on this earth .we vibrate in a different plane and spirits vibrate in a different plane . if our vibration is subtely accelarated or lowered we come in contact with these beings everything again boils down to physics in your terms.

Ballerina, I can respect your opinion about the existence of spirits as you have come to know them. What I can not respect is the unconvincing and most probably forged photographic evidence you assert to be compelling. For me this holds no validity or explanatory power. Do you have any evidence of your assertion regarding vibration in various planes? What are you referring to? Draven the Respectful Atheist http://dravenwriter.blogspot.com

I do seek knowledge through rational and logical processes, evidence, and try to only make assumptions when I have shot them full of holes and they still stand as the most reasonable ones to make. To me, knowledge leads to truth and truth is relative. I do not believe in absolute truth, and therefore I do not seek it. When you say that I do not seek truth in the same way as most, it may be because I believe the truth most others search for is unknowable or nonexistent. For me, the difference between the two possibilities is irrelevant. So, I seek knowledge as my truth. Draven the Respectful Atheist http://dravenwriter.blogspot.com

I very well understand and respect your views. When we are born we are born into a family into a culture and a religion and so the basis of our religion and philosophy is what we are taught to believe by our parents and our environment.Very few people question their beliefs and to probe the truth and arrive at an answer is an intelligent way of realising the truth and that is the highest form of truth.

I don't believe in ghosts. But I do believe in spirits. They are everywhere. And like people, there are good ones and bad ones.I also believe you can "visit" with spirits during a seance. But I wouldn't use a ouij board, it would be like putting your personal phone number on a billboard. You couldn't control who would try to reach you.

What is the difference between a ghost and a spirit in your opinion, sarahruthbeth? Draven the Respectful Atheist http://dravenwriter.blogspot.com

A ghost is a fictional character in horror or comedy films and plays, i.e. Casper the friendly ghost.A spirit can be male or female. It can also be just energy. But it is a part of a person that was alive once that lingers here on earth.

I wish that ghosts were real. LOL. They would make life a lot more interesting. However, since I am a rational being, I understand that thus far there is no scientific backing on this subject. Same as religion. I'm glad to see you are a respectful atheist, as well! It's nice to know that there are others out there who are atheists, but nice human beings! LOL Also, to answer another person's response, I do not feel that there is a huge difference between what people percieve as ghosts and what they percieve as spirts. A spirt, if I believed in such a thing, would be the "soul," or the essence and personality of a decessed or living being. A spirt is only the decessed part. Those are just my thoughts!

I agree. Ghosts aren't real, they're a product of human imagination and the tendency to be overconfident in one's senses.

Alot of people have claimed to have seen ghost or spirits are they delusion or having some kind of waking memory I have no idea. I know there has also been documented cases of poltergeist. One of the most popular cases the investigated believed the daughter to be doing it not thru a practical joke but that she was using her mind. It could be that people are actually seeing emotions or energy that is still somehow resonating from the area. After all every thought we have sends out brainwaves. or I could go way out there and say maybe its actually a area where the layer between our dimmension and another is so thin we might actually be able to see the other side. One thing is for sure we probly wont have a solid answer in our lifetime even if you dedicated your life to it. In some cases your better off not knowing the secrets of the universe than knowing.

Everything in this world, every form, everyone, is pure energy. I think energy is presented in different forms, like spirits. I don't really believe in ghosts, but I believe in what I know and I know human beings are solid forms of energy, but there are forms of energy, that are not solid. SO why couldn't there be ghosts in theory, even thou I don't believe in them?

I don't believe in ghosts per se, but I do believe in the power of the human mind to create situations or events that support whatever they most want to believe when they are under extreme duress. Such as a mirage in the dessert. Ghosts smack of spirituality which leads to the religious foundation. Religion has a tendancy to create things in order to authenticate the current beliefs. To me religion is like a chameleon and as such dangerous.

I do believe in ghosts. I am a skeptical person by nature, but my own experiences dictate that they do infact exist. I would never tell anyone, however, that they should rely on my expereinces and my evidence in order to make up their own minds. It's just that, I've never been able to understand why a person would choose to not believe something they can infact prove to/for themselves.
