Do you automatically assume that they eat too much? Or maybe eat too much sweets or foods that are bad for you? Do you think that obese or overweight people are all that way due to poor choices? If you see a larger person at McDonald's do you think, what are they doing here.. they better be ordering a salad. Be honest here, I have had some dealings with people that have these very thoughts, so honestly, what goes through your mind when you see a larger person?

hmmm, depends. I do not usually think anything special due to their size. If it is a woman and she has a nice dress on I might think - she looks great in that dress... if the individual is smiling/chuckling I might think He's in a good mood! If the individual is in a huff and haggared, I might think good grief I hope what ever has upset him passes soon. *shrug*

oh, I don't know...my rating dropped from a 99 to a 94. I have a suspicion that a particular person has a vendetta against me and is sabotaging my posts. Maybe one should not be able to rate a post unless they have participated in it. Or at least the negative feature. Bummer.

I am by no means a thin person either, what gets me is when I have heard (not directed at me, but disturbing non the less) people making comments about how larger people just need to eat less, etc. My grandmother had MS and was in a wheelchair 75% of the time. She was large, but because of a thyroid problem and MS she was unable to exercise. She never ate sweets or over ate anything. I hate when people assume things.

I use to be in very good shape; however, after having my second son I have gained weight. Actually I lost the weight and gained it right back. I know this is my own fault. I love food. I am trying to make a few healthier choices but overall I don't do all that well. I have a husband who is great and tells me I'm beautiful even though I have gained quite a bit of weight and it really is just a lack of discipline with me. I think my problem is I eat when I am stressed and I love food. My husband and I both reach for the comfort food when we have a stressful day. I also don't think that it helps that he is worse about this than I am. He walks in and first words are whats for supper and then he always wants dessert or seconds or something else to eat. We both gained weight with my second pregnancy and pretty much both kept it. I don't like that I have less energy and I really don't like how I look in a swimsuit but overall I am happy. I have met people who their obesity has become a handicap though where they cannot care for themselves or they require surgery meds etc. I try to not go overboard. I still try to stay active with my kiddos and try a vegetable and fruit or two each day. I think when I see overweight people (not to be mean) but I think am I that fat?

To be honest, nothing specific comes through my mind when I see such people. Hey, there is no crime to be large size. They are humans just like us and should be treated with equal respect. If anything, I am probably grateful that I have a better "figure" than them. :P

This is a good post and I'm one of the ones that are shocked or surprised when I see a large obese person. I ask myself "How does that person get so big? They must eat a ton a day? Do they even care for their health?" I'm telling you here in San Diego there are many people that have got so overweight, even people I know.

"there, but for the grace of God, go I" Poetic justice might have you being one so afflicted in years to come. A good many people have horrible secrets and faults that they keep hidden. Because an overweight person has (what is presumed to be, because not all are due to personal fault) his faults right out there for the world to see, not hidden...so he is fair game. Meanwhile, what is hiding in your closet that others should laugh and make opinions about? (this is a reciprocal question, please do not tell us your hidden faults :) )

well Blue, next time you see a large or obese person, why don't you think, hey that person is a human being and may have some medical issues. Many overweight people do care for their health, but cannot physically exercise due to extenuating circumstances. Until you walk a mile in someones shoes, you should not judge them. I happen to be overweight and I hardly eat at all, much less a "ton" a day. My husband eats 2 to 3 times what I eat and has no weight problem. I am being tested for Diabetes & thyroid conditions next week. My sister has a thyroid condition, my grandmother had Multiple Sclerosis and did not have the muscles to be able to exercise and was overweight as well. I don't mean to come off rude or negative, but it is attitudes like your own that make it difficult for those of us who just want to otherwise live our lives in obscurity.

My first thought whoa... this person is going through some major health problems and that he/she should see a doc first to know why they are fat! Otherwise nothing else runs through my mind. Ofcourse poor eating habits are cause of obesity but I know for sure that it is mostly health problems and emotinal well being that factors into a person being obese.

In all honesty I dont really think about what they look like or their eating habits, its none of my business. If anything I sort of am the same but opposite - if you will. I am a twig and have been called annorexic quite a few times, but I'm not I eat like a pig and I've been this way all my life.

i just think that i'm smaller. hehe it makes me feel that even thought i've gain pounds i'm not yet that big. however i don't think about those things like them eating more. it depends on your genes. because i know some people who don't eat that much but they still get fat. and some people i know have big appetites but are not fat. so it depends. that's why i don't think that why. you really can't judge a book by it's cover.

I try not to judge people. Sometimes overweight people don't eats lots and lots, they just eat all the wrong things. With so much fast food these days it is just too easy to eat wrong.

see, I don't eat alot of fast food either, nor do I eat alot. My doctor thinks I may have a thyroid conditon. But also, some people are just born with large genes as well. How many times have you seen a really skinny kid with overweight parents? Both my parents & grandparents were overweight, (on my father's side) there are many medical conditions in my family as well.

whenever i see a larger sized person, especially those who always smile to others, i feel like i want to make friend with him/her. from my experience, a smiling larger sized person can be a very good friend because they listens and can give a convincing advice whenever you're down - like 'compared to what i'm facing everyday, you're considered lucky'. what they want to eat or where they want to eat, to me, it's their freedom of choice.

When someone's actually big enough for me to notice their size they're big enough it almost HAS to be a medical condition. I might feel curious, but they have a right to eat what they enjoy just as much as I do. It's their body. I'd rather take 5 years off my life than diet 20 years. I assume that people have a fair idea of what they're doing to themselves. My ex, however (a BIG boy!) used to see large women and make fun of them. I thought "Um I think you might be fatter than she is." I don't understand why people want to judge others for their habits anyway, unless they eat babies or shoot at people or something.

I could not agree more. I am not thin by any means, and actually don't eat that much nor do I eat too many sweets. I never make fun of anyone, because you know what... that could be me.

After watching a fat guy there is a broad smile on my face. Right now I don't deserve to laugh at them as I have put on some extra pounds . Will reduce them in a month or so. I can judge he will buy a burger with extra cheese for sure. I have just gone through this link about what people do when they watch a fat people. read this link .... http://www.austin360.com/tv/content/movies/television/2005/10/18tvcolumn.html

Actually it is not necessarily true that he will buy a burger with extra cheese. Some people have Thyroid conditions and other medical reasons why they are heavy other than what they eat. I read the article and agree, that it has become a society where it is ok to laugh at heavy people, and no one deserves to be made fun of.

everytime i get to see large people, they always give me the impression that they lack self-discipline. maintaining a healthy and normal weight requires great self-discipline on foods we eat. once i see an overweight person, i always assume that they eat too much including junk foods, fatty foods, and everything that is bad to our health.

I have to disagree with you. There are many larger people that are that way due to medical problems. Not to mention that some people are born with slow metabolism and from larger families with larger genes. Just because everyone is not slim and athletic like you may be, does not mean they make poor choices.

A one-year-old Brazilian boy has baffled doctors with his rapid weight gain. Mateus Araujo weighs twenty-five kilos (55 pounds). He has undergone a series of examinations but doctors have still not identified any obvious problems Watch the video clip at http://www.reuters.com/news/video?videoId=45974&src=032107_1316_ARTICLE_PROMO_also_on_reuters

I don't assume anything in this day and age. I myself am over weight. I used to be 135 and athletic, but I have a thyroid condition and I had to starve myself (which by the way further murdered my thyroid condition) to be that size. I also ended up being on bed rest during 8 months of my pregnancy with my daughter. It has been 12 years and I have been unable to take my weight off. I dress appropriately for my weight, I do however see many heavy women wearing clothes that are totally unattractive and basically absurd. This causes me to question the mirrors in their house. There is nothing wrong with this question, it is something to think about. I work out twice a day and watch my diet. I eat foods I enjoy but in moderation. It is hard to be this heavy and people look at me funny, they don't know me and they just assume I am fat because I don't have willpower.Even my own mother is guilty of this! I can't speak for everyone, but this country has an epidemic of obesity. I think it is a bad idea that restaurants ask you to supersize it!!!!! Regular portions are really the size of a kids meal.

I am myself a larger person and have had many elders, friends adn others lecture me on losing weight blah blah which truly is annoying, as long as i am active and can do all my work i dont really think much about losing weight. i am working mother with a toddler so i truly have no time to do all the weight loss stories, but people do assume they are at an advantage to the larger people. How? is what i would like to know

These types of topics are interesting. Obesity is largely caused by good ol' overeating yet there are a large number of overweight people online who wave the thyroid flag. To me, the numbers don't add up. I fear most people are too insecure with themselves, even online to admit they are straight-up addicted to food and just don't care to stop or can't stop. These discussions are like a trap for poor unsuspecting individuals who come on in and admit they have a less-than-favorable opinion towards large men and women. They are snapped at and called superficial and smacked with the thyroid/medical condition flag instead of being applauded for their honesty, opinions aside. So after all that, here's my opinion. Living in a military community I see my fair share of morbidly obese women on a daily basis and to be brutally honest, it gets old. When I see these women I generally see a lack of self-respect and self-control. I also see women who don't seem to be interested in keeping their appearance up for their husbands. When I see a less-heavy woman, say under 180 or so, I don't think anything either way about them, possibly because I see these women in the gym or going for a power walk. I am intelligent enough to know about thyroid conditions, severe weight gain from steroids given for certain illnesses and during chemo treatments but these conditions do not represent the majority of the overweight population.

no one is going to bash you... my point with this topic is exactly what you just said... opinions. Many people think the way you do, and that is fine. I know there are a lot of people who over eat, I am neither insecure with myself, lack self -respect, self-control or any of the other things you have said. I am overweight. My sister has a thyroid condition, but has just lost a lot of weight, my grandmother had a thyroid condition and MS. I am currently being tested for thyroid condition and diabetes next week. My husband loves me as I am, and it has nothing to do with not keeping up my appearance for him. Just because I am overweight does not mean I over eat, make poor food choices, or never exercise. I had two cesarian sections which damages the stomach muscle (it's a bummer) and I only eat dinner ( a normal portion) every day. I work midnight shift, so I eat a banana in the am around 6am. I go home and do not eat again until @ 7pm when i eat dinner with my family. So in a nutshell, this topic is not to bash anyone for their opinions, just to make some people aware that appearances don't necessarily tell the entire story.

When I see larger sized people, I really don't mind. I'm not prejudice about them nor am I judging them harshly. Soem people weigh the way they are because of genes and soem because of their lifestyle. If they eat a lot and they have money to buy food, so be it. I have always believed that people are what they are because they want to be like that. We all have the freedom to choose how to live our lives. I just hope that those who are heavy also be conscious about their health and act before its too late for them to recover. Eating is good... hey, i love eating anything and everything as long as it doesn;t fight back. But I do try not to overdo every craving I have.

I am not obese, but over weight. I don't eat constantly, I really don't know why I am over weight. I have been going through quite a bit of tests lately for other things, so maybe something will pop up. I only have issues with people when they automatically assume I eat too much or all the wrong things. My husband always tells people that about me, as he knows this is a soft spot for me. My kids 7 & 10 actually eat more than I do.

When i see larger person, first i will feel for them. But they have take care of them in food, fat items and they have to take regular excersises, running practices.First they should set their mind, and try to work to become slim.Intitially they find it difficult, but they should not set back from that.

some people cannot exercise. My grandmother was ill and could not... so it's not always best to assume anything.
