What are some ways to use up bread?

We don't eat much bread usually. And sometimes we end up with lots of bread that is going to spoil if we don't use it. There is too much to fit in the freezer, so I wondered if you folks might have some ideas of how to use it in receipes that we might make to serve for meals or snacks or something.

The best thing is to buy little at a time (predict how much you're going to eat a week). Make sandwiches or French Toast out of 'em.

I love French Toast. What do you put in your egg batter?

I use vanilla. I've not tried cinnamon and nutmeg. I think I will try that next time. Thanks.

I adore French Toast, that's what I was going to suggest too. I make mine with vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

You can take bread and make a bread pudding, stuffing, to thicken soups, grilled, toasted, sliced into quarters for finger sandwiches, or cut into quarters, fried in butter and topped with your favorite treats.

Just reading this makes my mouth water! Fried in butter sounds absolutely, deliciously fattening! :-) Thanks.

I make all sorts of puddings with stale bread. A very easy one to make is bread and butter pudding. I grease an oven proof dish and butter all the slices of bread. I place them in layers in the dish and in between the layers I place some raisins and cinnamon. When the dish is full, I mix and egg with some milk and pour it over the contents and then bake it in an overn. Sometimes I add a cupful of guinness as this gives it a nice tast like Christmas pudding.

You can break it up into bread crumbs, saute the crumbs with some herbs and olive oil, and serve them over cooked vegetables with parmesan cheese or mixed in with pasta.

Actually we do feed the ducks and geese down along a nearby river. I really hate it when food gets spoiled and I have to throw it away. First of all, it is a waste of my money. But also I always think about people who don't have food in some of the poorer parts of the world and wish I could just give it to them! When I was growing up, my mom used to tell us to clear our plates because there were children starving in Europe. (It was just after WWII.)I always wondered why we didn't just send them the foods I didn't like to eat! If someone in Europe wanted my greens they were more than welcome to them! Of course that wasn't possible then and still isn't possible now. But it still seems such a waste.

I freeze my bread. It lasts for weeks. Just do not wait until the last minute to freeze it. Freeze it a few days before the stale date. It is a real money saver.

I used to always to that. I froze four slices in zip lock bags. But now I have a smaller freezer compartment and don't have much room for bread, although when I do have a space I fill it with bread until something else comes along.

Dry it and make your own breadcrumbs. Cut into cubes and dry it to use in future stuffing, or make croutons. Dry bread will hold for forever, but croutons will not if you use butter or anything else to make them that will go rancid (in the fridge they will hold for a long time, if you use olive oil or other oil and make sure they are thoroughly toasted). There are a lot of ways to jazz up the bread too - make crostinis, mini pizzas (using the bread as crust), etc.
