What do you feed your crabs besides store bought crab food? I give my crabs gold fish flakes but am not sure how often/how much to give them. Does anybody know? Also what vegetables or fruits do you give your crab? I give mine peas and corn and sometimes a bit of tomato. Are there any particular things that are bad for them to eat?

I would be interested to know the answer to this. For a couple of years, off and on, my daughter kept hermit crabs. They alwayus doed. They lived from one week to 6 months. We had tghe proper hermit crab food. We did weverythung right. I thik they are just very hard to keep in captivity. As far s I can remember with food, we also fed them fruit scraps.

I use to have five small hermit crabs ages ago, andrecently got two large guys...They are awesome!! I feed mine the store bought pellets and these store bought "cookies" once in a while...I also feed them fruit whenever I can and have scraps. I also have their calcium supplements they gnaw on, etc. I give mine chunks of pears, apples, pineapple, and sometimes peaches, etc. They love them!

Where abouts in Australia do you live Jenny? I know that crabs have to have a humid atmosphere and if you live in places where it's colder, you need to have a lamp on the tank or a heat mat to keep the humidity up. Here in Queensland we have a trpoical climate so it's not so bad, but on cold nights I put the lamp on their tank for a while.

Hi Asheka- I can't wait until my crabs get really big! I have one largish one and he's called Bulk. we also got a little guy called Uno-he has one leg missing and we felt sorry or him. I thought bulk would pick on Uni but they all seem to get along fine. Did you read what was said in post #2 about not feeding crabs fruit and vegies high in acid? I think we should stop feeding our crabs tomato....

I cannot see how you can control how much they eat. It is not like you feed them with an eye dropper. I have 13 hermit crabs. As usual, they eat on their own. I have a little dish of hermit crab food mix. They will eat anything. They will eat broccoli, tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, beans, meat, etc. However, you should not feed the any fruit or veggies with high acid content...tomatoes, pineapples,etc..I know people do feed them high acid foods because they think if the crab will eat, then it is ok...but it really isn't. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I'll definitely stop giving them tomato then. I know they love their peas though!

Our hermit crabs eat everything. The LOVE peanut butter which is their absolute favorite. They also get squash, peas, corn, beans, broccoli, apples, pears, bananas, strawberries, noodles, rice, mashed potatoes, tomatoes, hermit crab food, wheat bread and anything else we are cutting up.
