Foods to avoid during pregnancy?

I had my third and final baby in December. My baby sister just found out she is pregnant with her first after a long struggle with infertility. She asked me what she should stop eating. I absolutely drew a blank! I think the baby sucked all of my brains out!!!I want to give her some good answers, but besides the obvious answer of sushi, I could only come up with celery. I remember reading somewhere that celery can cause a miscarriage....although I am not sure as to the accuracy of the claim. MSG is another ingredient that is so prevalent in most of our packaged foods and extremely bad, but other than these few things, I am at a loss. Anyone have any other ideas?

Well my sister's doctor told her to stay away from caffiene, which includes chocolate! She was disappointed and even though he said a little chocolate won't hurt, he said you shouldn't eat it in big portions. So she just is cutting it out completely, maybe a piece every few weeks, but not like she used to.

Oh and I just remembered that pregnant woman AND young kids should not eat lunchmeat. I guess it is full of preservatives and salt and isn't good for anyone, but is worse for kids.

The concerns with lunch meat isn't the salt, it's a bacteria called "lystrosis" (spelling may be wrong). It's a bacteria most commonly found in raw/unpasterized milk or cheeses. It multiples in cold foods, like deli meats. If a mom had a craving for say lunch ham, she could cook the ham first.

I am pregnant. Due in July and from what I read. I can eat the rolls just now the raw ones so no tuna but majority of everything else is ok. I also read about Deli meat is not good for pregnant woman due to something in it.

Alrighty, things to avoid include: anything containing raw eggs (mayo, raw cake mix) soft serve ice-cream and milkshakes from fast food places - use your discretion, but remember if the place has not cleaned the machines properly, can lead to miscarriage. I avoided any milkshakes I did not make myself raw and uncooked meat - if you go out for dinner or anything, order your meat cooked welldone make sure fruits and veges are washed thoroughly before eating to avoid lysteria soft cheese and pates anything containing liver cut down on caffiene I cut down on soft drinks altogether, butI don't think that is really essential seafood thats all I can think of without getting my magazines and books out. I'm sure the list goes on and on, but mainly just be sensible, don't eat anything undercooked, or anything that you aren't sure about how well it has been prepared.

MSG and high fructose corn syrup are things that imo all people should avoid. I don't believe there are any particular pregnancy related risks with these additives, just that they're not healthy for anyone. Pregnant women should limit the amount of tuna & other fish that may have high concentrations of mercury. Fish that are long lived and predator fish are the ones to avoid. With tuna particularly, the cheaper tuna is actually a better choice than the "all white albacore". Fish contains high concentrations of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids which are very good for you, so (again imo) cutting fish completely from your diet while pregnant is probably not the best approach either. There are many conflicting studies about caffeine during pregnancy. As foods & beverages with caffeine don't usually offer any nutritional benefit, keeping them to occasional treats in moderation is the best bet. A cup of coffee or a glass a soda, is probably fine but juice, water & milk are better, healthier options. Someone has mentioned lunch meats/cold cuts already. Again cooking these foods can reduce the risks but you may not be interested in a hot bologna sandwich! Hot dogs should be cooked all the way through.

YAY for your sister :) I had my first last year & although i ate everything, i was then told what i shouldn't be eating! They all told me (Dr's & nurses etc) not to eat seafood, not to eat soft cheeses & Pate's (not sure if they're the same thing or not), not to have too much sugar or coffeine & also, NO processed meats (metwurst etc). They're all the main ones i was told about - so i guess they're the ones to avoid most of all! I hope this helps a little :) I wish your sister lots of luck!
