oweing the jail or state money

does anyone know if when they release a offender from jail if they the jail any money for the time they were there? and if so is it legal?

Some times prisoners can work in jail and receive money for their services. One county jail let non violent offenders work for the jail, cleaning up and doing basic cleaning, and they get time off their sentence for the work done.
