LOL what does it mean to you?

I know the actual words are (L)ots (O)f (L)aughs. As I have been seeing it (and using it myself) quite a lot on myLot. I have been reminded of an expression that was used when I was growing up "Whole fun, Half earnest". The reason this was brought mind, I have noticed some responses where someone reading them could take offence, be insulted etc. but LOL is added. Does that mean I really mean it or it is just a joke? Perhaps I am too cynical what do you think?

I personally use it to mean laugh out loud. So if I'm actually laughing as I'm typing I will put it in! Usually because something is funny or because I am joking. I think there are alot of people that use it in the other context... they are really being offensive but don't want to get any comeback from it! I personally think if you have something to say good or bad you should be willing to discuss it and support your reasons. Not have LOL as a fall back... well I was only joking ... if things get too hard!

That is when I use it also. When I actually start to laugh or giggle, then I put LOL. I also use it when I am joking and usually put LOL and Just Kidding. I don't want anyone to be offended. :)

I have always been told that LOL stands for laughing out loud on the internet. This is what I have been going by for many years now and use it whenever I am chatting with someone and am laughing. I think people use it both as a joke and meaning it. Some people are probably laughing out loud when they are typing or reading responses.

Yes, there's LOL and then there is ROFLOL (rolling on the floor laughing out loud). I think we need these little initials --it gives a little more meaning as to the context in which you reply to email, etc.

Sometimes statements are ambiguous and can be taken a couple of ways. If the person is standing in front of you with a twinkle in their eye, you get that it's tongue-in-cheek. The only way to indicate that kind of thing on line is to add LOL.

That's how I use it, and although I've heard both "lots of laughs" and "laugh out loud," I'm usually not physically laughing when I use it. Like you said, I use it to indicate a sarcastic/tongue-in-cheek comment. That's pretty much how I explained it to my grandpa a couple months ago when I told him how to use it. It was pretty cool. I think I'm the only person I know who has a grandpa that has actually typed "lol" on purpose and knew what it meant. It was pretty cool.

I know LOL from chatting sites I used to join. It means laugh out loud, and there is also LMAO etc. Sometimes I used hahaha instead of LOL but when I use it I do laugh hahaha as I type. I don't stop or attack anyone for using it even if their responses offend me, so it's only fair if I can use it in my responses too. If someone is offended for sure they will comment and up to now I never have anyone commented on my responses saying they are offended or sounds like offended.

I usually if you have noticed (or any have) use *L* its my way of shortening up the words *laugh out loud* or *LOL* its shorter to write. Personally I dont put *L* unless I literally mean I made a joke. *thinking* Okay can I think of anything that I have done it to recently? Gad you caught me when I got up and I cant think right now *L* (okay I did that and not on purpose) Point being, by accident I made a point. I put things like that. If I think I am being funny, I made a joke, or most of all I think I am funny (not always the case but hey heehee) then I will put *L*. I also put heehee or haha yup that means laughing too just another form. I know not everyone could be familiar with my uses of other terms so I dont shorten them much. I usually put a *G* for *grins* but on here I have at least twice put *grins* instead. *S* is *shrugs* for me. Oh and *sigh* had no shortenings Its just *sigh*. I have been doing blogs for years now (2001) and emails too are the same (but not always) and I use all kinds of stuff to make it look like you can feel the emotions. Back to your question so as to not go totally off subject. I think if someone put *L* in something that was bad. Maybe they meant it as a joke? Thats the way *I* would put it. Yeah? Or they thought it was a funny statement. Maybe they DONT have the same sense of humor as you. I have a morbid and sarcastic sense of humor. I laugh at things NOT funny. So if I say put *L* at something totally serious it could just be ME. Take it in in stride though. Maybe they meant it one way and you saw it another. Dont forget we all think different here and well it could just be the way they talk. hope that helps ya out!

Well, I always thought that LOL meant (L)aughing (O)ut (L)oud. But, it probably also could mean lots of laughs. Either way, when at the end of something said...it was not meant to be personal or rude. It was just a joke and all in good fun!! :D

I agree with the meaning of Laugh Out Loud, but they pretty much mean the same thing. That's one of the few abbreviations that I use on a regular basis other than hubby and kids (DH & DS). It helps with understanding the context of things.

I always thought that LOL meant Laugh out Loud. I think if someone writes this after something it means they are joking, so don't take offence to what they have written.

Actually LOL means laugh out loud. :P Buttt when I say something that can be taken as an insult and use LOL at the end.. I mean it as a joke. I do that so the other person knows I'm not actually being mean to them.

I believe when someone uses the LOL then it was meant to be humourous. If someone wants to insult me,then let them.I do not take threats from an unknown person who I will probably never meet seriously. It might let them think they are superior or give them some type of thrill, but I have no time for mind games.I am here for fun and knowledge.I will take what I need from a discussion/respons and leave the rest of it alone.

Well when I write it I mean it so maybe Heather you are being a bit Cynical there. But do not worry about it. If you see me writing it I mean that I am laughing. It also depends in what contents it is written. As sometimes it can be written in Sarcasm which I had to do in one of my Discussions today. And if you saw the Response I got I think you would have to

I think it could stand for several different things, but I have always understood it to stand for Laugh out Loud. But Lots of Laughs is good too. I don't know half of the shortcut phrases that are used, so I just do the ones I know... :)
