I just want to make a simple survey. What operating system do you use today? Give me your reason.

I use Linux, Mandriva 2006 distribution. The reasons why I use Linux are many: - Linux is not attacked by viruses, worms, trojans and other infections that windows users know very well. - Linux is more stable than windows, in Linux you won't see blue screens telling that there is an error. - Linux doesn't suffer of fragmentation. - Linux is faster than windows. - Linux has a lot of software, especially open source software. It's not true now that windows is easier to use than windows, simply is quite different to use, so you need some practice.

Faster than Windows, not completely true. Resource intensive distros like Open Suse may be a lot slower than XP, but smaller distros like Puppy are really fast. A further reason that Linux seems faster is that there may be no anti-viruses and anti-spyware to eat up the memory. I agree that Linux is not more difficult to use, but just different. I well remember how difficult I found Windows 95 when I used the GUI for the first time, and then when I got used to it it was so easy. Similarly, I have had teething problems with Linux, but hell, most distros are quite simple to use. One just needs a positive attitude. Hardware compatibility is a problem sometimes, but I have faced the problem rarely. I have tried plenty of distros on my system having AMD Athlon 3000+ with Gigabyte motherboard, 512 MB DDR memory, DVD writer with optical mouse and US keyboard, and Samsung Syncmaster 594MG monitor, and have faced very few problems. Simply Mepis infact recognised my Sony Ericsson K310i as a phone and I could transfer my pictures and video files quite easily. The main problem of Linux I feel is getting the support of the Hardware vendors. About bugs all software has bugs. I have had to reinstall XP from scratch when the power went off while XP was updating. Similarly, I have lost a few DVD movies because Totem in Ubuntu or Open Suse could not recognise them. One thing I know, when you factor in the price, many Linux distros are very good value for money, and better than Windows XP for me at least.

Currently I use Windows XP and Linux also.Windows is easy to operate while linux is more secured and more interesting for a programmer.Again using Linux depends on interest.New versions of Linux also have a good GUI but it is slightly back in graphich where windows is up.

I use Windows 98 SE and Windows NT. Very old, sure, but they do their job... It's easy to use and to maintain. And there is a lot of software available. For special purposes (e.g. Fax server), I use Linux. Much more stable.

Windows XP. It's good, easy to use, easy to customize, attractive, compatible with all modern software, compatible with all modern and most old hardware, problems with it are easy to fix, it is wasy to install and configure. I don't use linux because it is buggy, incompatible with almost all windows programs, incompatible with alot of hardware, difficult to configure, clumsy, requires you to constantly reenter your password, has bugs that are very difficult to fix, asking for help is more likely to get you insulted by Linux freaks, and no two distros are the same making most how to's useless if your distro isn't identical to the one used in the tutorial.

I use Windows XP sp2.It is best OS by Microsoft. If you are a developer it is most stable OS.Also we can use it as server OS. If in case of power cut your PC does not shut down properly,it does not affect your PC. But if you use Linux you must shut down your OS properly if not it will get corrupted. Also If some one use both Windows and Linux. Linux may corrupt Windows OS. Linux is most secure because no one use Linux. Popularity of Windows make it unsecured.

The problem with power cuts affecting the file system depends on the file system you use with your linux... ext2 - yes, you are right, power failures will lead to troubles. ext3, reiserfs - modern, journaling file systems are not so damageable. Well, if the cache of the disk controller has no time to write because of a blackout, you are in trouble with Windows XP too... And about the "server OS" - Windows XP allows up to 5 simultaneous connections, am I right? Thats few (too few?) for a server...
